Why AS Roma should appoint Daniele De Rossi on a permanent basis | Know More

AS Roma have endured a turbulent 2023-24 season as they try to finish on a high under the managerial regime of club legend Daniele De Rossi. In the quarterfinals of the Europa League and a more likely place in next season’s Champions League, De Rossi has done a fabulous job ever since replacing Jose Mourinho at the helm with shouts for him to take over permanently. The Italian 2006 World Cup winner is considered a prime candidate to land the job permanently having taken over the duties in January.

“It’s impossible to do more than De Rossi is doing,” noted Andrea Di Caro while writing on Gazzetta dello Sport

“He took a depressed Roma, bringing them from 9th to the race for a Champions League place. On Thursday, he’ll play in the Europa League quarter-finals against Milan, but it would be shortsighted to tie a future project to the qualification.”

De Rossi took over the reins of the side in January when Roma were ninth in the table and looked out of ideas under Mourinho. The Portugal gaffer was shown the exit doors with De Rossi coming in to take charge on a temporary basis. As things stand, he will be out of the job in the summer as Roma could switch attentions if better options are available.

While the fans are interested in De Rossi’s services to be continued, the board is exploring all the options including the possibility to hire Antonio Conte and Thiago Motta. Both managers have a proven record in the Italian top flight and are top of the wish list of AS Roma.

Who could be the next Roma boss?

Conte won the Serie A three times with Juventus before parting ways in 2014 while he led Inter Milan to the same title in 2021 but again parted ways due to a dispute with the board. He was last in charge of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and failed to complete a full season with the club. He is a free agent having been sacked by the North London club in March 2023.

Motta on the other hand has led Bologna on the verge of Champions League qualification as they sit fourth in the Serie A table. Italy are set to receive five Champions League spots if Roma, Milan, Atlanta or Fiorentina win their respective European competition.

However, if De Rossi helps Roma win the Europa League and secures Champions League qualification, it will be hard for the Roma board to look beyond the favourite son for a permanent job.
