“We are fine” – Carlo Ancelotti breaks silence on Alphonso Davies transfer rumour

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti plays down the possibility of Bayern Munich’s full-back signing Alphonso Davies. The Italian veteran coach defends his two players whose position is the same as Davies, Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, who are reported on the offloading list.  

Davies has been a headline throughout the week after his reported verbal agreement of joining the Spanish capital club. The Canadian’s arrival could be a warning signal for Mendy and Garcia. 

“At the moment we have two left-backs we trust, one is Fran Garcia, who played a lot at the beginning and did well, then Mendy came back, at the moment we are fine with them,” said Ancelotti via Football Espana.

Ancelotti believes Alphonso Davies is the “best full-back in the world”

This is not the first time Ancelotti praised Mendy in public and showed no intention to sell him in the near future. Last month, the former Chelsea boss labelled that the PSG youth graduate was a world class player, after he returned from a suspension.

“For me, he is the best full-back in the world,” Ancelotti told AS. “He copes really well defending two against one. Mendy has it all. He’s really good at defending when he’s at a numerical disadvantage.”

Despite his good relationship with the people in the club, AS reported that Mendy is on the selling list this summer as his contract will expire next year. Mendy’s performance has been disrupted by injury this season. This led him to struggle finding his place in the first team due to consistency and being left out of the squad multiple times. The French has featured in 24 matches across the competition for Madrid this season. 

Meanwhile Garcia also has 24 appearances on his stats this season, playing more league games than Mendy and produced five assists. Coming from Rayo Vallecano in the summer, Garcia is expected to add more options in Los Blancos’ flank post.

Unlike Mendy who was recruited from Lyon in 2019, Garcia is a product of Madrid’s academy, the Castilla. The club sold him to Rayo for €2 million -after loaning him initially, where he gained more playing time under the supervision of Andoni Iraola. 

“I have more desire and enthusiasm than anything else,” said Garcia upon his return to Madrid last year. “I have been improving these three years and now it is about dispelling those doubts that may exist. I am young and I have to keep learning every day.”

Amid the transfer buzz, Madrid are preparing their away agenda to Mestalla to face Valencia this weekend. Ancelotti’s squad sit firmly at the top of the table, collecting 65 points, six points clear from Girona in second place.
