Manchester United as a football team was created in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. This initiative was taken by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot. In the beginning, the team used to play games only against other railway companies.
It was on 20 November 1880, they played their first recorded match.
