Rodri snubbed usual popular choices Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and instead selected his Manchester City teammate Kevin de Bruyne when asked who the GOAT or Greatest of All Time was. De Bruyne and Rodri have formed the spine of the midfield that has taken Manchester City to the top of club football over the last few seasons.
This was a part of a clip of him playing a game of football word association with social media channel Goal Global from the PFA awards which took place on Tuesday night. All his answers from the game were exclusively players he has played with, including a cheeky response of associating his own name with the prompt of big game player.
It was a very successful night at the PFA Awards for Manchester City as their players were rewarded for a great domestic season. Phil Foden picked up the Men’s PFA Player of the Year award, while Rodri and Erling Haaland completed an all Manchester City podium. The trio were also joined by City teammate and captain Kyle Walker in the PFA Men’s Team of the Year.
While ‘Greatest Of All Time’ claims might be a little outrageous even for someone of De Bruyne’s qualities, the Belgian is without a doubt one of the best Premier League players ever. Interestingly, fellow City player Jack Grealish had also called De Bruyne the greatest back in January.
The attacking midfielder was a part of City’s team as they won 2-0 against Chelsea on the Premier League opening day. Rodri, however, missed out as he’s still yet to recover from an injury he picked up during the Euro 2024 final.
