Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman shared his concerns about the significant injury to Frenkie De Jong in a candid conversation during a golf tournament in Barcelona.
The former Barcelona coach expressed his regret about De Jong’s absence from Euro 2024, emphasizing the impact of the injury on both the player and the team.
“Of course, I talk to him because we know each other well. He’s worried about his injury,” Koeman said.
“Before the Euros, we thought he wouldn’t make it to the first match, but we hoped he could play in the tournament. It didn’t happen. He has a significant injury, and we have to wait to see how things progress. I wish him luck and hope he recovers soon, but he’s still not ready to play.”

Criticism of Barcelona’s Handling of Frenkie de Jong
Koeman didn’t hold back when discussing Barcelona’s management of De Jong’s fitness. He believes the club rushed the player back into action before he was fully recovered, which may have worsened his condition.
“I know much more than you do, and he played important matches when he wasn’t at 100%,” Koeman explained.
“He didn’t have the match rhythm and had few training minutes to play such crucial games against PSG. On the other hand, I understand because it was a very important moment for Barça, but in the end, it wasn’t good for Frenkie’s health.”
As De Jong continues his recovery, the Dutch team and fans alike hope for a swift return to full fitness for the talented midfielder. Koeman’s remarks highlight the delicate balance between player welfare and the demands of top-level football.
