Tottenham rejected interest from three European giants in Cristian Romero this summer

Football fans can expect to see Cristian Romero’s name regularly during the upcoming transfer windows. The 26-year-old has firmly established himself as one of the most potent centre-backs on the planet for his club, Tottenham Hotspur and the Argentina National Team. Romero was a part of the triumphant Argentinian side at the recently concluded 2024 Copa America. Following the tournament, the former Atalanta man generated interest from heavyweights all around Europe.

Extremely reliable transfer market reporter Gaston Edul has provided information about Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United keeping tabs on Cristian Romero during the summer. The three clubs enquired about his situation and availability at Tottenham Hotspur. Daniel Levy, though, shut down all interest in his star defender, driving away potential suitors at the very moment.

Cristian Romero arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from Serie A side, Atalanta in 2021. Since then, he has appeared in 101 games for the London club and has earned a reputation for being amongst the finest defenders in the Premier League. Romero has witnessed the likes of Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte, Ryan Mason, and Ange Postecoglou take over the managerial duties at Spurs with all of them trusting Romero as the undisputed starter at the heart of the backline.

Tottenham’s reluctance to offload Cristian Romero

According to Transfermarkt, Cristian Romero is the fifth most valuable centre-back in the world with a market value of around €56 million. Spurs’ boss, Ange Postecoglou is understandably not willing to part ways with him anytime soon. With Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain looming large, Daniel Levy refused to put any price tag on Romero. Tottenham was successful in retaining its best defender this year but the situation can quickly reverse in the upcoming months.

Cristian Romero’s Spurs contract will expire in 2027. This scenario will inevitably drive interest once again next year with a deal possible at a significantly lower price. Tottenham Hotspur will have a hard time negotiating a contract extension with Romero on the back of scrutiny from numerous top European sides. Ange Postecoglou and his side’s success on the pitch will possibly have a huge bearing on whether Cristian Romero decides to prolong his stay or not.
