However, this decision wasn't easy for him, as he mentioned in his statement. Pooran was the West Indies’ former T20I captain and did fairly well for the team. He made a post on Instagram announcing his retirement from international cricket. He was grateful to the Board and the fans for supporting him throughout his journey. Pooran wrote in his statement that it wasn't an easy decision, but he did think it through.
To the cricket public, after much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much, joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.
Nicholas Pooran said this in his Instagram post.

Nicholas Pooran’s International Cricket Career Overview
The stellar Caribbean batter, Nicholas Pooran, started his cricket career in 2016 when he made his debut against Pakistan in Dubai. It was a T20I match, probably one of his favourite formats. It took him three years to wear the ODI cap, but he did it in 2019 against England in Barbados.
After seeing his potential and the zeal to play cricket fearlessly, Pooran was handed over the team's responsibility as a captain. He was appointed as the white-ball captain in 2022. However, things didn't go as expected, and after a horrific series against Australia, he stepped down from the captaincy position.
In his retirement statement, Pooran has thanked the fans for their immense support and ‘unwavering love’ in his career. The left-handed batter last played a T20I match for West Indies back in 2024 against Bangladesh. He scored 15 runs off 10 balls.
To the fans – thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates, thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all.
He added.
Nicholas Pooran was an astounding batter who feared no bowler. The player never got a chance to wear the white jersey, but he was unbelievable as a white-ball player. In 61 ODI matches, he scored 1983 runs at an average of 39.66. He has hit 13 half-centuries and three centuries in the format. Speaking about T20Is, the batter has played in 97 innings and scored 2275 runs, at an average of 26.14. Even though the stats aren't looking good, the player has made a huge contribution to international cricket for the West Indies.
