IPL: Latest News, Predictions, Rankings & Team Profiles

IPL which stands for Indian Premier League is one of the most popular, cash-rich, and followed T-20 cricket leagues in the world with millions of fans across India and all over the world. Lalit Modi was the founder, first chairman and League Commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is a league that is more than a sport, it's like an emotion for millions of fans not just in India but also across the globe and this can be seen in the Stadium where fans come to support their favourite team. IPL was inaugurated in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket of India (BCCI) and is played every year from the month of March/April to May/June depending upon when it starts. This league has been played at different locations across India. These locations are mostly the home state of the teams that are part of this league. As mentioned earlier most of the matches are played in the home state because not all matches are played at the home state grounds of the teams that are part of this league, BCCI arranges some matches in other states as well for the fans of cricket. There is a total of 10 teams that are currently playing in the IPL which includes Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indian (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR) Royal Challengers Bengaluru(RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH), Delhi Capitals(DC), and two new joinee Gujarat Titans (GT) & Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). These teams play very competitive cricket which makes this tournament the most intense league with nail-biting finishes in every match.

The amount of money that is made from this tournament can be concluded from the fact that it is expected that IPL will contribute ₹1,150 crore to India’s GDP with its high brand value and revenue in the 2025 season. This tournament has been played in a very interesting format as mentioned earlier there are 10 teams that are part of this tournament, and these teams are divided into two different subgroups Group A and B. Both groups consist of 5 teams and teams from each group play 2-2 matches with the group member and 1-1 match with the teams from the other group in the league stage of the tournament.

The top four teams after the league stage go into the Play-offs of this tournament. When the top 2 teams get the benefit of being the table toppers, and they play Qualifier -1 against each other the winner directly goes to the finals, also the loser of this match gets one more chance to qualify for the finals in the Qualifier-2. On the other hand, the teams in the 3rd and 4th positions play the eliminator match against each other and the loser of this match gets eliminated from the tournament and the winner plays Qualifier 2 against the loser of Qualifier-1. The winner of this match goes into the finals of the IPL. Then the best two teams battle against each other and the winner becomes the champion of this tournament. There are a total of 74 matches played during the tournament including all the league and play-off matches.

IPL History and Evolution

The Indian Premier League (IPL), launched in 2008, is the creation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It was envisioned by Lalit Modi, who was the BCCI Vice President then. It took a similar franchise-based sports league format of the NBA and the English Premier League, where teams were controlled by corporations and celebrities. The first season of the IPL kicked off on April 18, 2008, with a cracking opening match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Kolkata Knight Riders, Brendon McCullum's record-breaking 158-run innings being remembered for a lifetime.

The first season included eight teams from different locations all over India. Rajasthan Royals, coached by Shane Warne, was the surprise champion. IPL was not just about cricket; it introduced glamour, entertainment, and business into the game. Bollywood stars, businessmen, and sports tycoons became the owners of the teams, while cricketers from across the globe participated in the game, taking it up to the level of global popularity. The tournament involves auctions through which players were purchased by the 10 franchises, making the cricketers and the teams the subject of headlines every year. It initially started with 8 teams and then later on in 2022 it shifted to 10 teams. But the number of group stage games for each team remains the same. The IPL not only changed the dynamics of Indian cricket as it has given rise to many new young Indian cricketers. It has also redefined new standards for broadcast, marketing, and fan engagement across the globe. Several superstar cricketers from world cricket come and participate in the rich cash league of the world. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has increased in terms of size, format, and impact. The league initially consisted of eight teams, but it expanded, suspended players, and rebranded since then. The Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants entered the tournament in 2022, making it ten teams and increasing its coverage and competition.

One of the biggest shifts came in 2011, when the number of teams was temporarily increased to ten with the inclusion of the Pune Warriors and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. These teams were controversial and were later disbanded. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were also suspended for two years (2016–2017) for a spot-fixing incident, with the Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant serving as temporary replacements. The regulations of the tournament have also shifted over the years. To add strategic depth, advances like the DRS (Decision Review System) and playoff structures were implemented, with the Impact Player rule being introduced recently. Salary caps have been redefined, with teams able to retain a larger number of players. In broadcasting and online outreach, the IPL has led the way. There has been multilingual commentaries, fan engagement through fantasy sites, and international streaming rights, the league has enthralled audiences across the globe.

Major Rule Changes in IPL 2025

IPL has always been at the spearhead of cricket innovation, and the 2025 season represents yet another bold move in that regard. In the ever-evolving nature of the sport and with an increasing requirement of justice, equity, and entertainment, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) brought forth several significant rule changes to the IPL 2025.

One of the most notable alterations is the reintroduction of saliva to polish the ball, an age-old technique that was banned during the COVID-19 pandemic. This change will assist the bowlers, especially in the pitches where reverse swing can prove to be a game changer. Another major change is the 'second new ball' rule, which introduces a new ball after the tenth over of both innings. In addition, the Decision Review System (DRS) is expanded to include waist-high no-balls and wide deliveries. This technology gives more accurate umpiring decisions while minimizing conflict. The IPL has also adopted the ICC's Code of Conduct with a demerit points system to provide consistency in player conduct across formats and competitions.

Saliva Ban Revoked

One of the most discussed IPL 2025 code changes is the elimination of the saliva ban, which represents a return to traditional cricketing customs. The ban on saliva, introduced in 2020 as a protective health measure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, was made to reduce the risk of virus transmission on the field. The BCCI has formally lifted the ban, permitting bowlers to once again use saliva to shine the ball.

Over the last few seasons, the game favored batsmen, particularly in the night conditions when dew cancelled out the bowlers' grip and swing. The re-introduction of saliva use works to rebalance ball and bat somewhat, giving pacers more room to scheme and experiment on batter with the swing bowling and flowers and cutters as well.

Second Ball Rule

Introduction of the Second Ball Rule at IPL 2025 has produced a huge sensation in the world of cricket. The rule prescribes every game to be conducted simultaneously using two new balls on both ends, a mode traditionally reserved for the 50-over game but which is now for the first time being introduced for T20 cricket.

The main motive of this innovation is to keep the ball condition uniform, and ensure equity in the conditions of bowling, and advance the level of competition. Before, bowlers often labored under dew and an outdated ball softening by the later part of the innings, tending to place batters with a huge upper hand. With two new balls, bowlers have a greater chance of creating swing, seam, and bounce, especially during the powerplay and middle overs. It has increased competition between bat and ball, along with that the ball condition consistency over overs, enhancing the quality of cricket.

New Code of Conduct

The IPL 2025 season has delivered exciting games and tactical changes, as well as a new Code of Conduct, which will improve the discipline, sportsmanship and integrity of match play.

Although the new rule includes penalties that were not as strict, the behaviours that need to change, reporting behaviour, and the overall adjudication of the principle is considerably more exhaustive. The BCCI and IPL management have circulated new guidelines concerning players" behaviour on-field, off-field in changing rooms, and interactions between team members, match officials and the public.

The code of conduct fines include:

  • Heavier fines and suspensions for dissent, slow over rates, sledging, and verbal abuse.
  • Forcing respect procedures to be followed when dealing with umpires and match officials.
  • Absolute zero tolerance on discriminatory behavior or gestures
  • Regulations on online conduct, restrictions on improper use of social media during the event.

DRS Expansion

Decision Review System (DRS) system has been one of the finest invention in cricketing aspect. It is used to challenge on-field calls for LBW, catches, wide balls and no-balls as well. The technology was introduced back in 2008. DRS uses devices such as Hawk-Eye (ball tracking), UltraEdge/Snicketer (sound recognition), and ball impact prediction to examine appeals.

DRS is now applicable not just to dismissal decisions (e.g. LBW, caught), but also to no-ball and wide-ball decisions, particularly in death overs, where the judgements can have a significant bearing on the outcome of the match. With increased reviews and a wider usage, teams have to rethink their DRS plan. Captains and players have to be more alert, and the decision-making has to be more acute, particularly in tight battles.

Impact Player

The Impact Player rule is one of the most fascinating and tactical amendments to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The rule was first implemented during the 2023 season. The rule allows teams to swap one player in their playing XI with a specified substitute at any point during the match, up to the completion of the 14th over of either innings. At the toss, both sides name five substitutes, one of whom can be summoned to replace a player on the field.

The Impact Player rule has revolutionized IPL play by introducing a dynamic, tactical element that complements the high-speed nature of T20 cricket. For instance, a batting side can introduce an additional bowler later, whereas a chasing side can add a power hitter based on the required run rate. Overview with its significance, impact, benefits and more.

Strategic Time Out

The Strategic Time-Out is an exclusive aspect of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that sets it apart from a lot of other T20 leagues around the globe. One strategic time-out is allocated to each IPL franchise per innings. The bowling team can take a timeout between the 6th and 9th overs, while the batting team can take it between the 13th and 16th overs.

Both times-out last 2 minutes and 30 seconds, providing teams with a welcome respite in the high-speed T20 scenario. The timeout can significantly influence the momentum of the game. A struggling team can use it to break the other team's momentum, while the winning team may use it to plan how to continue dominating. Most IPL turnarounds have come right after a well-timed time-out, so it is a very important juncture in games. It is just a brief respite, but it could be the deciding factor.

Retired Out

The phrase "Retired Out" has generated a lot of controversy and interest over the last few years, particularly because it is not a common occurrence in competitive cricket. Unlike the conventional "Retired Hurt," where a player withdraws from the field because of injury and may return to bat, a "Retired Out" batsman withdraws from the crease in a tactical way and cannot return to bat. This concept has added a new twist to recent T20 tournaments, in particular the IPL. This provision is addressed in Law 25.4 of the MCC Laws of Cricket.

This strategy first emerged in the IPL during a match in 2022, when Ravichandran Ashwin retired himself to make way for a more attacking batter to come in under a death-over situation. In the dynamic era of T20 cricket, "Retired Out" is an ingenious tactic that, if utilized properly, can turn the game around. It is the shape of things to come in terms of cricket tactics: bold, dynamic, and unexpected. So far this season, it has been utilized twice by Tilak Varma, and Devon Conway has retired out of the match. Overview with its significance, impact, benefits and more.

IPL Teams Expansion and Termination

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has experienced dramatic changes over the years, both in club addition and cancellation. These changes have been pivotal in shaping the league into the cricketing extravaganza it is today. The IPL has since its inception in 2008 featured eight teams from different locations across India. The popularity of the league rose, leading to the introduction of new teams in subsequent seasons. In 2011, the IPL welcomed two new teams: Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Kochi Tuskers were, however, dissolved after one season in 2011 following ownership conflicts with the BCCI.

Rising Pune SuperGiants and Gujarat Lions were added in 2016 after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended from playing for two years. The IPL experienced another historic expansion in 2022 when it welcomed two new franchises, the Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow SuperGiants. For the first time in almost a decade, the IPL witnessed an increase in the number of teams.

IPL teams and their home grounds

The Indian Premier League (IPL) teams play their home matches in different stadiums across India. Here is a list of all the home stadiums of the ten IPL teams:

  1. Wankhede Stadium – Mumbai Indians (MI)

It is located in Mumbai, Wankhede Stadium is famous for its batting-friendly pitch, even bounce, and short boundaries, making it ideal for high-scoring games. The sea breeze helps fast bowlers with swing in evening matches, but as the game progresses, batsmen dominate. The outfield is quick, and chasing teams generally have an advantage here. With a passionate Mumbai crowd backing them, MI has made this venue a fortress.

  2. M. A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) – Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chepauk is home of CSK and is known for its slow, turning pitch that heavily favors spinners. The dry surface makes stroke play challenging, and scoring big runs requires careful shot selection. CSK builds its squad around spin bowlers who excel in these conditions. The stadium’s electrifying yellow army of fans creates an intimidating atmosphere, making it one of the toughest venues for visiting teams.

  3. Narendra Modi Stadium – Gujarat Titans (GT)

It is situated in Ahmedabad, this is the world’s largest cricket stadium with a capacity of over 132,000. The stadium has different pitch which varies, sometimes favoring fast bowlers with bounce and other times supporting slower bowling. The large ground dimensions make six-hitting difficult, forcing batters to rely more on placement. Gujarat Titans have used this to their advantage, strategically fielding players suited to the pitch conditions.

  4. Eden Gardens – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Eden Gardens in Kolkata is one of the most historic cricket venues in India, known for its massive and vocal crowd. Traditionally, the pitch has been spin-friendly, but in recent years, it has become more balanced, aiding both pacers and batters. The stadium’s atmosphere is electric, with fans creating an intense environment for opposition teams. KKR’s spinners have historically dominated here, making it a challenging ground for visiting sides.

  5. Arun Jaitley Stadium – Delhi Capitals (DC)

This stadium is previously known as Feroz Shah Kotla, this stadium in Delhi has shorter boundaries, making it favorable for aggressive batsmen. However, the pitch is generally on the slower side, assisting spinners in the middle overs. Fast bowlers get some help early on, but dew plays a factor in night games. Delhi Capitals often rely on power hitters and crafty spinners to take advantage of home conditions.

  6. M. Chinnaswamy Stadium – Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

The very famous Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is known as a batting paradise due to its small boundaries, flat pitch, and high-altitude conditions, which allow the ball to travel further. The fast outfield makes defending totals difficult, leading to many high-scoring encounters. However, bowlers, especially spinners, struggle due to the lack of assistance from the pitch. RCB’s big-hitting batsmen thrive in these conditions.

  7. Sawai Mansingh Stadium – Rajasthan Royals (RR)

It is located in Jaipur, this stadium has a balanced pitch that slightly favors bowlers, especially pacers who get good movement early on. The outfield is not as fast as other IPL venues, making stroke play more challenging. Spinners also get some assistance as the match progresses. Rajasthan Royals focus on a well-rounded squad with quality bowlers and smart finishers to succeed in home matches.

  8. Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium – Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

It is situated in Hyderabad, this stadium offers a balanced wicket with initial help for pacers and good batting conditions as the match progresses. It has a fast outfield and medium-sized boundaries, making it an ideal venue for stroke players. The pitch slows down later, benefiting spinners. SRH’s bowling-heavy approach suits these conditions, helping them dominate at home.

  9. Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium – Punjab Kings (PBKS)

It is located in Mohali, this stadium has one of the best batting surfaces in IPL, with true bounce and early movement for fast bowlers. The large boundaries make it slightly challenging for power hitters, but batters who play proper cricketing shots excel. Punjab Kings often rely on their pace attack and aggressive batting lineup to capitalize on home conditions.

  10. Ekana Cricket Stadium – Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

It is located in Lucknow, this is one of the newest IPL stadiums with a spin-friendly pitch similar to Chennai’s Chepauk. The slow nature of the track makes it difficult for batters, and teams often prefer playing with extra spinners here. The large ground dimensions further aid bowlers. LSG’s strategy revolves around all-rounders and spinners who can dominate in these conditions. Each IPL home stadium has unique conditions on which teams build strategies and form their team accordingly. Home advantage is a crucial factor in the tournament as every team has 1 home and 1 away game against all the opponents.
