The excitement for IPL 2025 is already building up, and if you’re an IPL fan, you know this season is going to be just as thrilling as ever! With top teams battling for supremacy, fresh talent looking to make an impact, and the return of some legendary players, IPL 2025 promises high-intensity cricket, unexpected twists, and unforgettable moments. The excitement and anticipation surrounding the IPL has not only formed a significant part of cricketing history but showcases a testament to the hard-work that every player achieves on field and also at its 18th edition in 2025, the IPL have continued to enthrall audiences globally, combining dynamic cricket with cricketers, movie- stardom and fan-centric atmosphere. The 2025 season hopes to extend this tradition: Ten hard-fought teams will come together in a well-orchestrated tournament over two months. In this review, let's explore IPL 2025 in detail.

It all kicks off on March 22 and wraps up with the grand finale on May 25—that's 74 matches over 65 days of non-stop action. This year, the league will be contested at 13 sites across India. That's a big geographical expansion, which means fans from all corners of the country will get to experience the live action. Eden Gardens in Kolkata is where the opening match and the final will take place. That's a nod to its history: it's already hosted the IPL final twice before—in 2013 and 2015. During the league stage, each team will play 14 matches. They'll face the other group teams twice at home and away. Then there are the teams in the same row: they play each other twice. The remaining four teams from the opposing group get one match against each other. This format has helped to keep the old rivalries alive and not increase the matches as well as it still remains 14.

How many teams are in the IPL 2025?

The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), also known as IPL 18, features ten teams competing in a thrilling tournament that runs from March 22 to May 25, 2025. The format includes a group stage followed by playoffs, with matches held across 13 cities in India. Kolkata will host both the opening ceremony and the final.

IPL Teams and Groups for 2025. The teams are divided into two groups for the league stage:

Group A consists of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals.

Group B includes the Delhi Capitals, the Gujarat Titans, the Lucknow Super Giants, the Mumbai Indians, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mumbai Indians

  • Captain: Hardik Pandya

  • Head Coach: Mahela Jayawardenae

  • Home Ground: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Mumbai Indians aren’t just a team—they’re a legacy! With five IPL titles under their belt, MI has been one of the most dominant & consistent franchises in IPL history. Led

by a mix of experienced stars & young talent, they know how to turn up the heat when it matters most. Their batting firepower, lethal pace attack, & ability to perform under pressure make them a serious contender every season. Whether it’s their iconic battles or last-over thrillers, MI never disappoints.

Hardik Pandya has been made the Mumbai Indians' captain for the 2025 season after Rohit Sharma last season. This change is to bring in new energy and direction to the team. Mahela Jayawardene is the head coach and will bring in his vast experience and tactical knowledge to the team. Their home ground is the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which is known for its batting-friendly surfaces and electric atmosphere and often hosts high-scoring matches.

Can they add another trophy to their collection in IPL 2025? Let’s wait & watch!

Chennai Super Kings

  • Captain: Ruturaj Gaikwad

  • Head Coach: Stephen Fleming

  • Home Ground: M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Yellow fever is real, & it’s all because of CSK! One of the most successful IPL teams, Chennai Super Kings, led by their legendary captain, has built a reputation for consistency & composure. They thrive under pressure, turning tough situations into match-winning moments. Their squad is a perfect mix of experienced campaigners & rising stars, making them a nightmare for any opposition. With a solid fanbase and a winning mentality, CSK never backs down from a challenge.

The plan is to build a strong foundation with their top order and let their all-rounders go to town in the middle overs. Their focus on spin bowling, especially at home, remains a part of their gameplan. With a mix of old warhorses and new blood, CSK hopes to make the playoffs and win their 6th IPL title. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, also known as ‘The Den,’ has been their fortress. They also have the most loyal fan base in India, and it has been driven worldwide for the Yellow Army. With a balanced squad, world-class spin attack, and leadership continuity, they remain a serious contender for a playoff finish. Will they make history again in IPL 2025? You can’t rule them out!

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

  • Captain: Rajat Patidar

  • Head Coach: Andy Flower

  • Home Ground: M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Mumbai

RCB fans say it every year—Ee Sala Cup Namde—but will IPL 2025 finally be their moment? The team has had some of the biggest names in cricket but is still searching

for its first IPL trophy. With a lineup that often boasts powerful hitters and match-winning bowlers, they always promise entertainment. Whether it’s record-breaking partnerships or thrilling chases, RCB knows how to keep fans on the edge of their seats. RCB's road to the title is going to depend heavily on how much their bowling improves. Their batting—led by the likes of Rinku, Russell, and Venkatesh—is more than capable of winning games on its own. But that balance and discipline in bowling that they've been lacking is what will make or break their title chances this time around. And they've got one of the best bowlers in the business on their team to help them get there. That silverware they've been chasing for the last 17 IPL seasons is still within reach. But RCB has a history of leaking runs at the death, even with all those big names in their lineup. That inconsistency has cost them games in the past—and it could do so again in 2025 unless they sort that out. If they can balance their squad & handle pressure moments, 2025 could finally be their year!

Kolkata Knight Riders

  • Captain:  Ajinkya Rahane

  • Head Coach:  Chandrakant Pandit

  • Home Ground:  Eden Gardens, Kolkata

KKR has tasted IPL glory twice, & they’re always in the mix when it comes to serious competition. Their fearless approach, solid all-rounders & ability to turn underdogs into champions make them a dangerous team. With a fanbase that brings unmatched energy & a squad full of impact players, KKR is always a team to watch. They’ve had their ups & downs, but when they click, they are unstoppable. Rinku, Russell, and Venkatesh are finishers of the highest order.

But if KKR gets off to a poor start, the pressure to rescue those innings can sometimes backfire. Their top order needs to click much more consistently than it has in past seasons. One area where KKR is a bit light is in proven Indian death-overs specialists. Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora are promising but untested in the high-pressure environment of a playoff game. And that's exactly what opposition teams will be targeting. If their senior players stay fit and youngsters like Angkrish Raghuvanshu continue their form, they will be a nightmare for any opponent and defend the title as well. Can they recreate their past success & add another title in IPL 2025? The Knights are ready for battle!

Gujarat Titans

  • Captain: Shubman Gill

  • Head Coach:  Ashish Nehra

  • Home Ground: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

GT made an explosive entry into the IPL, winning the title in their debut season in 2022 & proving they mean business. With a strong core of talented players, smart strategies & fearless cricket, they have quickly become a force to reckon with. They’ve shown they can handle pressure, dominate opponents & deliver big performances on the grandest stage. GT’s tactical mastermind, Ashish Nehra, is recognized for his relaxed and playful approach. His cooperation with the director of Cricket, Vikram Solanki, was a critical factor in GT's notable growth. Shubman Gill led the way as GT captain.

Gill is still developing as a manager, but his temperament, consistency of his influence, and his maturity of cricket make him a sustainable long-term investment for the franchise. His appointment as a skipper reflects GT's general goal of supporting core Indian players and establishing a sustainable leadership style. GT finds a way to use the state of the house well and often plays two spinners at speed. Now, with expectations higher than ever, can the Gujarat Titans continue their dream run & grab another trophy in IPL 2025? Time will tell!

Rajasthan Royals

  • Captain: Sanju Samson

  • Head Coach:  Rahul Dravid

  • Home Ground:  Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

RR started with a bang, winning the very first IPL in 2008, & since then, they’ve been on a journey to reclaim glory. Known for backing young talent & playing fearless cricket, the Rajasthan Royals always bring something exciting to the table. With a squad that mixes explosive batters, crafty bowlers & energetic all-rounders, they are always a wildcard team capable of surprising the best. If they find their rhythm early, they could be serious contenders for the IPL 2025 title.

The RR leaned mainly on the first three (Jaiswal, Buttler, Samson). If it fails, a medium order may be subject to load. Liyan Parag has yet to establish himself as a consistent run-getter, but Shimron Hetmyer has been a hit-and-miss while explosive. Samson is extremely talented, but his attitude is inconsistent, sometimes overly aggressive, and sometimes too cautious. Sawai Manssingh Stadium has slow, dry traces that often prefer spin and takers. RR changed teams accordingly. Tracking is usually difficult here, so RR can hit first, generate scoreboard prints, and unleash spinners. Can RR bring the trophy home after so many years? Their fans sure hope so!

Lucknow Super Giants

  • Captain:  Rishabh Pant

  • Head Coach:  Justin Langar

  • Home Ground: Ekana Stadium, Lucknow

LSG may be one of the newer teams in the IPL, but they’ve already made their presence felt with back-to-back playoff appearances. They’ve built a squad with powerful hitters, reliable all-rounders, & quality bowlers who can change the course of a match. With every season, they’re getting stronger, & 2025 could be the year they take things to the next level.

In contrast to many other high-quality IPL stadiums, Lucknow's LSG home is famous for its slow, spin-friendly terrain. LSG's backroom crew is first-class. Langer provides grit and organization, while John Tiroth maintains the standards of elite fields. However, adjustments are required to play here. Teams often make setting or pursuing large sums difficult in Lucknow, so the first approach and discipline of LSG bowling can impact defenses. LSG is one of the most diverse and deadly teams.

It features Rishab Pants, Nicholas Forlan, David Miller, Aiden Marklum, and Mitchell Marsh. But your inexperienced Indian bowling attacks create problems on the page. Can LSG finally break into the IPL final & clinch their first-ever title? They have the firepower to do it!

Sunrisers Hyderabad

  • Captain:   Pat Cummins

  • Head Coach:  Daniel Vettori

  • Home Ground:  Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

SRH has built a reputation for being one of the most balanced teams, with world-class bowlers & solid batters in their lineup. They lifted the IPL trophy in 2016 & have been in the race for another ever since. Their strength has always been their bowling attack, which has turned games around on multiple occasions. SRH is no longer an outsider. They are the favourites with enormous potential. With Cummins as the captain, a flexible bowling offense locked by the devastating middle order, Klassen, Kishan, and Nitish Redd, SRH is ready to boost the serious playoffs.

Whether it's Shami’s new ball bowling or Cummins' bowling on the front, they want to dominate the power plays on both sides of the ball. With fresh faces & experienced campaigners coming together, SRH will be looking to make a strong statement in IPL 2025. Can they bring back their dominance & challenge for the top spot? They sure have the squad to do it!

Delhi Capitals

  • Captain:  Axar Patel

  • Head Coach: Hemang Badani

  • Home Ground:  Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi

DC has been knocking on the door for an IPL title for a while now, but can IPL 2025 be their year? They’ve had some of the best young talents & explosive international players, yet the trophy has remained out of reach. When they get going, they are one of the most exciting teams to watch, capable of pulling off massive run chases & dominating with the ball. With a new captain in Axar Patel, along with the cricketing mastermind of Indian cricket, Sourav Ganguly, the management staff works in perfect sync.

Free-flowing ideas of aggression and smart strategy, along with the unmatched experience of Indian cricket, seem impossible to beat. Looks like the Delhi Capitals are all set to make a deep push to the playoffs. They have a balanced top order, which is supported by a spin-heavy bowling attack, making them fierce contenders. If they can find the right balance & handle pressure moments better, they might just go all the way this season!

Punjab Kings

  • Captain:  Shreyas Iyer

  • Head Coach:  Ricky Ponting

  • Home Ground: Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur

PBKS has had its moments of brilliance but hasn’t quite managed to lift the IPL trophy yet. Known for their aggressive batting & unpredictable performances, they can be both thrilling & frustrating to watch. Their squad often boasts exciting talents, but consistency has been their biggest challenge. The Punjab King may no longer be considered an outsider, but the potential destroyer of IPL 2025. Every department has firepower and a guide that knows how to maintain cooling, a rounded international core.

Consistency is the main difficulty. If you can summarise your victory in succession, create rhythms on both power plays and improve your death bowling. PBKS has all the ingredients to make a playoff run and win the IPL.  Will IPL 2025 be the season where they finally put everything together & make a title run? If they can find the right combination & maintain their form, anything is possible!

Format of IPL 2025

The format remains the same as the previous two editions. The 10 teams are divided into two groups of five, with each team playing 14 league matches—facing teams in their group twice & those in the other group once, plus one extra match.

After the league stage, the top four teams qualify for the playoffs, which follow the traditional IPL format:

  • Qualifier 1 – The winner advances to the final between the top two teams.

  • Eliminator – A knockout match between the third & fourth-placed teams.

  • Qualifier 2 – The loser of Qualifier 1 faces the winner of the Eliminator for a place in the final.

  • Final – The ultimate showdown to decide the IPL 2025 champion!

What to Expect from IPL 2025?

With new talents emerging & experienced players looking to dominate, IPL 2025 will be a mix of aggressive batting, smart bowling & thrilling finishes. Teams like MI & CSK will be aiming for another title, while RCB, DC, PBKS, and LSG will be hungry for their first-ever IPL trophy.
