After agreeing to a contract extension with the Portuguese club, Diogo Jota was approached by Atletico Madrid in 2016 and signed a five-year contract with the club, joining La Liga. Madrid instantly loaned him out to FC Porto until the end of the season. During his time at Porto, he scored crucial goals in all competitions, establishing himself as a more complete forward.

Jota further joined EFL Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan in 2017. He showcased impressive goal-scoring abilities with Wolves, scoring in numerous matches.
