Bolivia vs Chile Player Ratings
  • Miguel Terceros with an early goal.
  • Both sides were red-carded thanks to some poor challenges.
  • Bolivia's first win in the last six games in the World Cup qualification race.

Bolivia secured 3 crucial points in their hunt for the World Cup football after beating Chile 2-0 at El Alto. The home side opened the scoring early on through Miguel Terceros. They were down to 10 men soon, but Chile failed to take advantage. When Chile were reduced to 10 as well in the second half, Bolivia took their chances and killed the game with a late second goal from Enzo Monteiro. This defeat mathematically kills Chile's hopes of making it to a World Cup final as they miss out for the third time in a row.

The hosts stormed into a shock lead inside the opening five minutes through Terceros. Diego Medina emerged on a good run down the right and found the winger in the box. He skipped past a couple of half-hearted challenges to bundle it home past an onrushing goalkeeper. Bolivia thought they could sit back, but their left winger, Lucas Chávez, put them in trouble by earning a deserved red card for a violent high boot and stomp. It allowed Chile to come back into the game, but the hosts defended brilliantly to take a halftime lead into the tunnel.

Chile responded with a triple sub after the break, but Francisco Sierralta sabotaged the game for them after getting a red card just 10 minutes after coming on. It restored a level playing field as Bolivia comfortably saw out the game before adding a late second goal through Enzo Monteiro. Chile threatened to score through Alexis Sanchez and Marcelino Nunez late on, but they were well repelled by the Bolivian defence, who were absolutely unbeatable on the night. Here are the Bolivia National Football Team vs Chile National Football Team Player Ratings.

Goalkeeper

Carlos Lampe-6.5/10

He was tested by a barrage of shots from outside the box. Very few troubled him as his defence did a great job of cutting them out.

Defenders

Diego Medina-7.5/10

Ventured forward and smartly assisted Terceros by slipping him inside the box.

Diego Arroyo-7/10

Kept things ticking for his side with accurate long passes and was solid in his challenges to win the ball back multiple times.

Efrain Morales-7/10

Had a good chance to score from a corner, but it was slightly off-target. His box defending was on point to help his side.

Roberto Fernandes-6.5/10

A good throwback to the old-school full-back who just does no-nonsense defending and holds his shape. When his side was down to 10, he was even more conservative at the back.

Midfielders

Ervin Vaca-6/10

Acted as a barrier in front of his defence as he kept his play simple and hounded any loose touches to win the ball back.

Robson Matheus-6.5/10

Stepped up with the ball at his feet as he ventured forward, creating chances and taking shots.

Gabriel Villamil-7/10

He was given a free role to join the attack and create chances. Had a great chance and could've scored. Curbed his instincts to be more defensive after they were down to 10.

Forwards

Miguel Terceros-8/10

Opened the scoring with a terrific curler after receiving the ball under pressure and beating the keeper. He was clinical with his set pieces as well.

Carmelo Algaranaz-6/10

The forward was caught offside early on as he tried to play off the shoulder of the last man. Was starved of service as they went a man down, but did well to help his side out defensively.

Lucas Chavez-4/10

Started the game with a fine dribble but suffered a headloss as he raised his feet and caught an opposition player. His card was upgraded after a VAR check, leading him to take an early shower.

Moises Villarroel-6/10

Hector Cuellar-6/10

Yomar Rocha-6/10

Manager

Oscar Villegas-8/10

His side started the game brilliantly, but he was made to think hard after the early red card. Managed to tinker with his shape without any substitutions.

Goalkeeper

Brayan Cortes-6/10

Tried to jump off his line to close the angle for the first goal, but was a fraction slow to it. Produced decent saves later on.

Defenders

Fabian Hormazabal-6/10

A red card for the winger he was marking made life easier for him as he had more freedom to attack down that side. However, he failed to reap its rewards by being impotent in attack.

Igor Lichnovsky-6/10

He was a playmaker for his side from the back with his laser-sharp passes between the lines. Kickstarted many moves with good finds. A moment of defensive weakness led to the opener.

Benjamin Kuscevic-5/10

He was in no man's land as he allowed Terceros to slip away without challenging him for the first goal. Picked up a yellow card and was replaced at halftime to avoid risks.

Gabriel Suazo-5/10

Failed to keep up with the pace of Diego Medina, as he was beaten too easily for the first goal. Failed to provide the attacking thrust for his side.

Midfielders

Felipe Loyola-6.5/10

He took charge of his side's goal hunt with some inspired runs forward. Came close to scoring, but it wasn't to be for him.

Rodrigo Echeverria-6/10

Helped his side maintain pressure and retain the ball by making some good tackles and ending Bolivia's counters quickly.

Lucas Assadi-5.5/10

Offered precious little on the ball as they tried to break down Bolivia's defence. Needed to be replaced with a forward-minded player at halftime.

Forwards

Dario Osario-6.5/10

The youngster linked up with Alexis Sanchez, but his decision-making let him down in the final third. Was replaced at halftime for a different outlet.

Alexis Sanchez-6.5/10

The veteran rolled back the years as he created chances for fun against a deep block. But his teammates weren't able to take them on, and he himself missed the scoring boots.

Lucas Cepeda-6/10

Showcased his speed and creativity on the counters, but his inexperience showed when he had to get the tangible results.

Substitutes

Francisco Sierralta-2/10

He came on to replace Kuscevic, who was on a yellow card. But he ended up getting a red card and jeopardised the whole game for his side with a foolish tackle.

Javier Altamirano-6/10

Victor Davila-6/10

Rodrigo Urena-6/10

Marcelino Nunez-6/10

Manager

Ricardo Gareca-4/10

His side conceded an early goal again as they were very slow to get off the mark. Despite having a numerical advantage, they failed to pin the opposition down and create meaningful chances. The triple substitution at half time didn't work and turned out to be a net negative.

Sportsdunia Player of the Match goes to Miguel Terceros.
