Spain vs Switzerland Player Ratings: Zaragoza’s injury-time penalty seals thrilling 3-2 Win

Spain and Switzerland were playing in a dead rubber match today as both teams had their places sealed. However, the Spanish side needed an injury time penalty to get the win on Monday.

Spain went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to Yéremy Pino but the second half was a thriller. Monteiro scored just after the hour mark before Bryan Gil restored the home side’s lead 5 minutes later. Zeqiri scored from the spot with 5 minutes to go to level things up. The EURO 2024 champions looked set to drop points but Zaragoza won and scored a penalty in injury time to seal a 3-2 win.

Goalkeeper

Álex Remiro – 7: Had to make no saves today in the 45 minutes he played.

Defenders

Óscar Mingueza – 6.5: He hardly put a foot wrong in the defensive third but never managed to get himself involved in the game. Was rather slow in making his way forward and

Pau Cubarsí – 7: Solid performance from the Barcelona defender and that was key to Spain’s win. He blocked a couple of shots and made one good interception in the game.

Aitor Paredes – 6.5: Decent game and he came close to scoring the winner but just could not get his shot into the net. Solid defensively and was brilliant with the ball at his feet too.

Alejandro Grimaldo – 8: Spain’s best player today as he was brilliant in all areas. He even had two shots on goal, but only one was on target.

Midfielders

Marc Casadó – 7.5: Played the whole match and was brilliant in most of the phases of the game. He misplaced just 6 passes today and won all but one of his ground duels.

Fabián Ruiz – 7: Gave away the late penalty to Switzerland and that could have proven costly for them. He was all over the pitch today but just did not look comfortable enough.

Pedri – 7: Had his penalty saved but luckily for him, Yeremy Pino scored on the follow-up after Nico Williams’ shot was blocked. Decent game overall but could have done a lot better.

Forwards

Yéremy Pino – 7.5: His awareness has to be commended for the first goal of the match. He stayed focused despite the missed penalty from Pedri and the shot from Nico getting blocked to score his first goal since the ACL injury.

Álvaro Morata – 7: It was Mr Offside playing for Spain once again but won the penalty with a well-timed run. Played just the first 45 and was taken off at half-time.

Nico Williams – 6.5: A threat every time he got the ball but just not enough. His shots were blocked or saved with ease but he looked like he could have easily ended with a hattrick in the 60 minutes he played.

Yvon Mvogo – 8.5: The best player on the pitch today despite ending up on the losing side. He made 5 exceptional saves, including a penalty, to keep his side in the match until the end.

Defenders

Edimilson Fernandes – 6: Played the whole match but just not enough to get his side a win or even a draw. He was not able to deal with Nico Williams and other Spanish forwards throughout the match.

Eray Cömert – 6.5: Got booked in the match but he was key in keeping Alvaro Morata quiet. The defender was always in the right position today.

Ricardo Rodríguez – 6: Good but nothing great today. He was never in good positions but was getting beaten easily to the ball.

Miro Muheim – 6: Won just two duels today and never managed to make things difficult for the Spanish forwards. He was looking to attack at every chance and that saw him go out of position a lot.

Midfielders

Remo Freuler – 6.5: Played the whole match but the match just went by him. Managed just 25 passes and lost possession a lot.

Granit Xhaka – 6.5: Another Swiss player who just could not get himself into the match. The Spanish midfielders were almost playing keep away and the former Arsenal man suffered chasing them.

Filip Ugrinić – 5: Played 45 minutes and managed just 4 passes. He was just chasing the ball all the time and never managed to get on it.

Simon Sohm – 5.5: The attacking midfielder played an hour and never looked like he could do anything. Took two shots in the match but never came close to scoring.

Dereck Kutesa – 5.5: Another Swiss player who just seemed to be lost on the pitch. Never looked like he was going to threaten the Spanish defence.

Forward

Zeki Amdouni – 5: Taking him out at halftime was the best decision. He played just the first half but never looked like he was going to get close to scoring.
