Injury Rule

Barcelona will use emergency injury rule to register players this summer

Barcelona defender Ronald Aarujo will be sidelined after he sustained an injury while on duty with Uruguay at Copa America. He underwent surgery on Monday and is expected to remain out of action for four to five months.

Before his injury, it was reported that the Catalan giants were intending to sell the Uruguayan this summer and bring in a large sum to spend on a few players in this transfer window. However, this injury could very rule Araujo out for the remainder of 2024 and Barcelona might propose to go back to the negotiating table and renew Araujo’s deal.

What is the emergency injury rule and how can Barcelona use it?

In order to bring in a new player, teams are required to de-register one of their injured players. The player must be ruled for more than four months, and La Liga will allow the club to discount the player’s salary in order to bring in a replacement. The season is yet to start and Barcelona are considering using the rule again.

Defender Inigo Martinez who only has a year left on his contract has reportedly impressed new manager Hansi Flick in training. But the Spaniard still remains unregistered and Barcelona could use the “emergency injury rule” to register the former Athletic Bilbao defender.

But keep in mind, that Barcelona would have to add Araujo’s salary to their wage bill next season which will be counted towards the salary limit.
