Cristiano Ronaldo’s Euro 2024 struggles highlight decline
The performance of Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2024 has led to concerns about his future in football.
Dave Hancock, who is a well-respected physiotherapist for England and Chelsea shared his thoughts on the 39-year-old star’s recent struggles. Ronaldo, who is currently playing for Al-Nassr, failed to score in five appearances during the tournament, which is a stark contrast to his illustrious career.
Hancock believes that Ronaldo is facing the difficult reality that he is no longer the player he once was. Speaking to OLBG he expressed sympathy for the ageing athlete by saying:
“For players like Cristiano Ronaldo coming to the end of their career, it’s soul-destroying. You want them to play forever, but ageing doesn’t allow us to do that.”
Hancock also touched on the psychological challenges athletes face as they near the end of their careers. He said:
“It’s about when to call it quits. Many athletes struggle to get out of bed, feeling their body takes 30 minutes to get going before they get out on the pitch. They start thinking about what they really want to do.”
Uncertain Future for Portugal’s Star
The uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo’s international career has also been echoed by his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota. Speaking to Liverpool Echo (Via GOAL) Jota admitted he wasn’t sure if Euro 2024 would be Ronaldo’s last international tournament.
By the 2026 FIFA World Cup Ronaldo will be over 40 and his contract with Al-Nassr will have expired in 2025. Jota said:
“I am not sure about the Euros being Ronaldo’s last international tournament. I am not sure what he has decided.”
The two have played together for Portugal 28 times, contributing to seven joint goals. If Ronaldo decides to retire from international football, Jota could potentially step into the number nine position.
As Ronaldo reflects on his future, fans and teammates alike are left to wonder if this legendary player will continue to grace the pitch or if it’s time for him to hang up his boots.
