Georgia have created history and have qualified for the Euro 2024 round of 16 by beating Portugal! They managed to seal a 2-0 win over the 2016 champions and have sneaked into the next round with a third-placed finish in Group F.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 2nd minute after a mistake from Antonio Silva. The Portuguese star’s misplaced pass helped start the counter-attack and Georges Mikautadze put the winger through on goal.
Mikautadze went from provider to scorer in the second half after Silva made another mistake. The defender gave away a penalty and the Georgian forward stepped up to convert.

GOALKEEPER
Giorgi Mamardashvili – 9: One of the best performances from a goalkeeper at Euro 2024. The Georgian star at his very best against Portugal and kept the Portuguese forwards away from the back of his net until the very end.
DEFENDERS
Otar Kakabadze – 6.5: Comparatively the weak-link in the Georgian defense. However, he did not make any mistake that cost his team dearly. Also helped his side keep the clean sheet.
Giorgi Gvelesiani – 7: Played 76 minutes, but never gave Joao Felix a chance to get past him. Managed to make one interception, blocked a shot and made three clearances.
Guram Kashia – 7.5: Lost just one of his duels in the game and made 10 clearances, while also blocking a shot. Had to make just two tackles and won both.
Lasha Dvali – 7.5: Won all but two of his duels and was not shy to charge at the Portuguese forwards.
Luka Lochoshvili – 7.5: Needed to be on top of his game to keep Conceição away from the goal. He was beaten multiple times, but still managed to do well when needed.
MIDFIELDERS
Giorgi Chakvetadze – 7: The only midfielder who was interested in attacking. He took two shots, but none troubled Diogo Costa.
Otar Kiteishvili – 7: Sat back and defended – almost made it took like he was the sixth defender in Georgia’s 5-man defense.
Giorgi Kochorashvili – 7: Defensively solid from start to end and was making it hard for the Portugal players to get past the first wall. Never gave the opponents any space to get their shots away.
FORWARDS
Georges Mikautadze – 8: Inch-perfect penalty and was ready to counter at all opportunities. He hardly got close to box, but was still positioning himself to perfection and got the assist for the first goal.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 9: They do not call him the ‘Georgian Maradona’ for no reason. The forward was in top form today and did not give the Portugal defenders any breathing space.
SUBSTITUTES
Giorgi Tsitaishvili – 6
Solomon Kvirkvelia – 6
Anzor Mekvabishvili – 5.5
Zuriko Davitashvili – 6

GOALKEEPER
Diogo Costa – 7: Came close to saving Georgia’s penalty, but should have done a lot better for the first goal. Had to make just one save in the entire game.
DEFENDERS
António Silva – 4: A night to forget for the youngster. His mistakes gave Georgia both their goals – a misplaced pass for the first one and then gave away the penalty for the second.
Danilo Pereira – 7: Was a rock in the defense and was hard to get past. He ensured that Georgia had a lot of their counters stopped in the nick of time.
Gonçalo Inácio – 7: Similar to Pereira, but did not have a lot to do defensively. He was more involved in building up play and keeping the ball ticking.
Diogo Dalot – 7: Came close to scoring in the second half with a stunning shot, and then once again late in the game, but both were saved. Was good defensively and there was nothing he could do about the goals.
MIDFIELDERS
João Palhinha – 7: Was brilliant in the first half, but was taken off for Neves at the break. Roberto Martinez wanted a more attacking player as they were in control of the ball for the majority of the time.
João Neves – 6.5: Decent game for the youngster, but he could not impact the play. Was trying his best to find space, but could not create any chance.
Pedro Neto – 6.5: Played as a left wing-back at some times today and still managed to impress. Came close to scoring from a corner in the first half, but it was pushed off the line by Mamardashvili.
FORWARDS
Francisco Conceição – 7.5: Portugal’s best player without any doubt. He was a livewire from start to end and was hard for the Georgian players to handle.
João Félix – 5.5: Poor effort from the forward as he hardly made an impact. Was strolling on the pitch but his tricks will make the highlight reels.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 6: Got booked in the first half and was hooked off in the second. Apart from the freekick, he came close to scoring once, but it was blocked easily.
SUBSTITUTES
Rúben Neves – 5.5
Nélson Semedo – 6
Gonçalo Ramos – 6
