In a strategic move to fortify their backline, Arsenal are reportedly eyeing Bayern Munich‘s 24-year-old defender, Matthijs de Ligt. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, is determined to address defensive concerns and believes that de Ligt could be a key addition to the squad. Despite recent speculations around signing a midfielder or striker, Arteta has emphasized the importance of shoring up the defense.

The Gunners have intensified their search for a left-sided centre-back, with an inclination towards versatility. While Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Ajax’s rising star Jarrel Hato have been mentioned as potential targets, the primary focus remains on securing a solid centre-back. Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio is a crucial target, though competition from other top clubs and his release clause pose challenges.

Recent reports suggest that Arsenal have made a loan-to-buy offer for Inacio, indicating the club’s seriousness in reinforcing their defensive options. De Ligt currently holds the third spot in Bayern’s center-back hierarchy, behind Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae, largely due to injury issues this season.

However, the likelihood of securing de Ligt’s services in the January transfer window remains uncertain. Bayern Munich’s reluctance to part ways with the defender midseason and the potential financial demands add complexity to the situation. De Ligt’s market value stands at €65 million, and Bayern, having paid slightly more, would likely seek a profitable deal.
