With Gameweek 9 of the Fantasy Premier League around the corner, it’s time to bolster your squad with some top-performing defenders. In this article, we’ll highlight the defenders who have the potential to rack up the most points this week.
5. Nathan Collins
Nathan Collins might not make it to this list every week but he is a very solid Fantasy Premier League option for the cheap price point of £4.5m. Brentford are usually quite solid defensively and he is their top point scorer amongst defenders. They are also really good from set pieces, and Collins, who wins 72% of his aerial duels, has already scored once this season. This week, they play an Ipswich side who are yet to win so expect them to do well.
4. Ian Maatsen
When Aston Villa signed Ian Maatsen, most would have expected him to walk straight into Unai Emery’s side and do well. However, that hasn’t quite been the case as Lucas Digne on the other hand has been starting. But Maatsen played against Bologna midweek in the Champions League and was excellent. So it is expected that he will start at the weekend against Bournemouth and get some good returns.

3. Pedro Porro
Crystal Palace have been really poor in the season so far. Not only are they yet to win a single game, their system altogether looks quite dysfunctional. Scoring goals has been a struggle with Ebere Eze and JP Mateta completely off colour and Michael Olise having left the club. This means it’s a good week to have a Spurs defensive asset and who better than Pedro Porro. The Spanish fullback is great at attacking too, so he is a double threat.
2. Rico Lewis
Rico Lewis deserves a lot of credit for the way he has made a place for himself with the Manchester City team. Although he is a diminutive young man, his reading of the game, spatial awareness and technique have made him a big favourite of Pep Guardiola’s. Although the assists haven’t started flowing yet, it’s only a matter of time before it does. Southampton face City this weekend, so it’s a chance for the academy graduate to get some big points.
1. Josko Gvardiol
Josko Gvardiol is reaching that stage where he is soon going to be a must have in Fantasy Premier League. He is one of Pep Guardiola’s first names on the team sheet. Defensively, he contributes to a solid City team and now he has been popping up with fairly regular bangers to save his side. This weekend against Wolves was another example of this. Don’t rule out another goal as Southampton take on Manchester City in GW9.
