Premier League is a week away from kicking off. All the contestants have prepared the season in the best possible ways, from playing a preseason outings to signing players to strengthening the squad. The latter is not the case with Liverpool as the Anfield-based side have not been busy with it. With the window transfer is near from closing, here are the five potential signings Liverpool could secure before the season starts.
Xavi Simons
Speaking of attackers, Liverpool have tons of options upfront. The likes of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah could be ideal for Arne Slot game plan; all those names have agility and pace needed to make the scheme works.
If the boards have plans to land one more player, in case the aforementioned above was injured or underperforming, Xavi Simons could be an option. Simmons has all the attributes needed with that so-called ‘Arne ball’.
He is fast, agile, and one more plus is both Simons and Slot speak the same language. Nunez, Gakpo, and Diaz played relatively under the expectation last season. One addition in the squad could push them all to compete and fight for the first-team position next season.
Anthony Gordon
The Liverpool native has been talked about for months about the possibility of him joining The Reds. His status as a former Everton player did not stop the Anfield-based side from pulling a move for the attackers.
However, the talks have been stagnating despite being months of circulating around. Same as Simmons, Gordon could add competition among the forwards next season. Besides, his playing style is likely to suit the Slot game plan which requires movement and speed.
Gordon’s contract with Newcastle United will run out in two seasons, meaning this will cost Liverpool a quite significant amount of money to spend. This might be the cause if the negotiation falls out since The Reds have a reputation of not spending cash lightly.
Theo Hernandez
Not only becoming an integral part of clinching the Premier League title, Andy Robertson was one of the players to bring Liverpool to the level they are now. However, The Reds cannot rely on the Scottish forever.
Liverpool signed Konstantinos Tsimikas a few seasons ago to add competition with Robertson. But the Greek has not yet lived up to expectations despite helping the club win the FA Cup in 2022 and last season’s Carabao Cup.
Theo Hernandez could be a serious signing for Liverpool if the club is really serious in building the squad. The French is on the A-list among the best left full-backs in the world, signing him could add more serious competition to Robertson on the left flank. In fact, his contract with AC Milan will run out in a season, what a moment for Liverpool to snatch a bargain from the Italian side.
Lutsharel Geertruida
Why bother looking for a right full-back when you have one of the best ones in the world? For years, Trent Alexander-Arnold made fans from other Premier League’s elite jealous of his presence in Liverpool. But this has become a two eyes of a sword phenomena for The Reds.
Trent, sometimes, could underperform and this would cause a major blow in Liverpool’s game plan. On the other hand, The Reds don’t have an equivalent replacement for seasons before Conor Bradley emerged to the surface last season.
Geertruida could again add competitions for other right full-back in Liverpool. His nationality and the language he speaks are also a plus as the club has several Dutch players in each post.
Martin Zubimendi
The midfielder has been a hot topic for the past few days following rumours of Liverpool trying to sign him. Since the declining form of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, The Reds struggled to find an even replacement.
Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo may be performing well last season but the two still show inconsistencies in some moments. Ryan Gravenberch, who is expected to carry the same responsibility, also struggled to even cement himself in the first team.
Zubimendi is regarded as the missing piece of the puzzle in Slot’s big plan this season. The 25-year old could play an anchor in the midfield, transitioned the defence and attack vice versa. A perfect hub for Liverpool’s ball flow in possession games.
