Canada squad for Copa America 2024: Who’s in and Who’s out, Key Players and Predicted Lineup

Canada is one of the fastest-growing football nations in world football, with stars like Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, and Stephen Eustaquio making a name for their country by playing for big clubs.

They will be participating in the country’s first-ever Copa America tournament this summer in the USA, and they will look to put their best foot forward. Being an up-and-coming footballing nation, they will rely on their players, who play in leagues all over the world, to perform and to make a mark for Canada on the world stage.

Having said that, let’s take a look at their squad in detail, starting with the goalkeepers that have been picked.

Goalkeepers

Portland Timbers custodian Maxime Crepeau will likely be coach Jesse Marsch’s first-choice goalkeeper for Copa America 2024.

Minnesota United’s Dayne St. Clair, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Thomas McGill, and Bordeaux B’s Gregoire Swiderski will be the backups for the tournament.

Defenders

Skipper Alphonso Davies will be a mainstay on the left side of Canada’s defence and will look to bomb forward when given the chance. He will be joined by Derek Cornelius, Moise Bombito and Alistair Johnston to make up the starting back four for Marsch’s team.

The likes of Kamal Miller, Kyle Hiebert, Richie Laryea, and Luc de Fougerolles will all compete for game time and will have limited playing time at the upcoming tournament.

Midfielders

FC Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio will anchor the centre of the park for Canada alongside Watford’s Ismael Kone in a four-man midfield. The pair will be flanked by Tajon Buchanan on the right side and Liam Millar on the left.

Samuel Piette, Mathieu Choiniere and Jonathan Osorio will be on the bench and will do their best to earn some game-time.

Forwards

Canada have a talented crop of attackers and will have plenty of options going into Copa America 2024. Jonathan David will lead the line for the team, with Cyle Larin playing alongside him. Another option is Aberdeen’s Junior Hoilett, who could also play as the second striker.

Elsewhere, Ike Ugbo, Jacob Shaffelburg, Theo Bair and Charles-Andreas Brym will make up the rest of the list of attacking players.

Predicted Lineup for Canada at Copa America 2024    

As mentioned earlier, Jesse Marsch will prefer picking Maxime Crepeau in goal ahead of the other three options as he has played at a higher level of club football.

Canada will go with a three-man defence as they do in important games. Alistair Johnson will be joined by Joel Waterman and Kamal Miller at the back.

In front of them, Stephen Eustaquio and Ismael Kone will anchor the midfield, with Tajon Buchanan on the right flank and Alphonso Davies on the left.

Jonathan David will be deployed as the number 10, or in a free role, and will have Cyle Larin and Ike Ugbo playing in front of him.

Players missing for Canada in Copa America 2024

As luck has it, Jesse Marsch has had a fully fit roster of players to pick his squad for the summer and will have all his players at his disposal for the tournament in the USA. However, they have been drawn into a tough Group A alongside holders Argentina, Peru, and Chile.

They will have to be at their best to even make it out of the group stages. There will also be additional pressure since it’s their first-ever time playing in the Copa America.
