The Euro 2024 tournament is around the corner and all the qualified nations have released provisional squads in the build-up. Hosts Germany released their 27-man list yesterday, with most of their star players included, and one or two surprises in the mix.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann will take charge of Die Mannschaft for his first-ever major international tournament and will look to perform well being the host nation. Without further ado, let’s take a detailed look at Germany Euro 2024 squad.
27-man provisional Germany Euro 2024 Squad
The coach and the selection committee have mostly picked household names for each position. However, some players have had breakthrough seasons and have been rewarded for the same, while others have been excluded after subpar showings this campaign.
Goalkeepers
Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be the main goalkeepers for Germany, with the former expected to start. They have also included Alex Nubel and Oliver Baumann, with a decision between the two for third-choice expected to be made before the tournament kicks off.
Defenders
In defence, veterans Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rudiger will lead the line, alongside solid company in the form of Nico Schlotterbeck, David Raum and Jonathan Tah. Maximiliam Mittelstadt, Waldemar Anton, Benjamin Henrichs and Robin Koch are the others on the list.
Midfielders
In midfield, Germany will celebrate Toni Kroos’ return to the national team after coming out of retirement to play in Euro 2024. He will be joined by a star-studded group including Ilkay Gundogan, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Leroy Sane.
Others on the list are Robert Andrich, Chris Fuhrich, Pascal Gross and Aleksandar Pavlovic.
Forwards
Finally, Nagelsmann has picked five forwards in his 27-man provisional squad. At least one of them will be excluded from the main list. Experienced heads of Kai Havertz and Thomas Muller will be joined by Maximilian Beier, Niclas Fullkrug and Deniz Undav.
Surprise Inclusions & Exclusions
Despite having a stellar season for Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels and Julian Brandt were nowhere to be seen in the provisional list. The pair has stepped on multiple occasions to help their team win but it seems they are not part of Nagelsmann’s plans. Another player excluded was Timo Werner, who has struggled with game-time and consistency with Tottenham.
Key inclusions are Mittelstadt and Pavlovic, as they will get a wonderful chance to show their calibre on the world stage.
