Croatian midfielder Luka Modric set to leave Real Madrid?

Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has seen his minutes this season severely depleted for Real Madrid with the growing importance of Eduardo Camavinga and is likely to leave the historic club at the end of the season.

Luka Modric to leave? A final season in the heart of the Real Madrid midfield

At 38, Luka Modric is certainly not growing any younger. Despite being one of the best in his position, age is slowly catching up with the Croatian legend. This season Real Madrid gaffer Carlo Ancelotti seems to have realized that and has offered  Modric a much reduced role to play. In LaLiga, Luka Modric has started only 12 games for Real Madrid this season in 28 match days. Furthermore, the Croatian has managed to accumulate an average of only 50 minutes per game, a drastic step down for Luka.

In the UEFA Champions League, Luka Modric has only started thrice for Real Madrid this season. With Luka wanting more game time and Carlo progressively decreasing playing time, Luka Modric could truly leave Real Madrid in the summer. His current contract with Los Blancos will run out in June 2024 and now it seems that Real and he will not extend it. If the news is true, it will truly be the end of an era at Real Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti on Luka Modric’s future at Real Madrid

The media has constantly asked manager Carlo Ancelotti about Luka’s future at Madrid. While speaking to the media a while ago, Carlo said, “If a young player like Arda Güler warms up but doesn’t play, it doesn’t matter. But Modric, at 39, a five-time Champions League winner, a legend…I can’t do that to him. He knows that.” Elaborating further on the Croatian’s future, Carlo said, “ He is a legend of the sport and of this club. He’ll have to make a decision about next season himself.”

All these statements have progressively made it clear that even if Luka Modric were to stay at Real Madrid, he would be a bench player and a mentor to the young side. Whether Luka wishes to stay at Real Madrid or not will finally be his decision. Although at the moment it seems unlikely as he has expressed his desire to participate more often in proceedings.
