What are the Major Differences b/w the Premier League and the Champions League?

English Premier League is a domestic league which only consists of clubs, particularly from England and Wales. Whereas, the UEFA Champions League is a continental tournament — in which all the major clubs from across Europe take part to compete for glory.

Another major difference between the two competitions is EPL is the league with 38 games per season for each club. The club that claims the most number of points at the end of the season decides the Champions. Meanwhile, UCL decides the winners following a series of knockout games from the Round of 16, Quarter Finals, and Semi-finals (two-legged matches both home and away).

Also to be noted that UEFA has announced, a newly introduced format that will be following a league phase system similar to what is used in domestic leagues replacing the existing group stages and the rest of the knockout phase will be kept the same from the 2024-25 season onwards.

The Winner of the UEFA Champions League is hailed as the champion of Europe and directly qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup tournament.

The new format will host 36 clubs instead of 32 teams, from this season the group stages are scrapped from the competition. All the clubs will now placed in a single league format and teams will be further divided into four pots as per coefficient and overall rankings.

Teams from each pot will be playing eight games in league phase four home and four away against various oppositions from different pots. The rest of the structure is the same as the previous format with two two-leg knockout fixtures home and away.

At the end of the league phase, clubs cementing first to eighth place on the points table directly qualify for the Round of 16. Teams from ninth to 24th spot will contest against each other for the remaining 16 spots in the next round.

However, teams finishing at the bottom from 25th to 36th are eliminated from the competition. This means, the total of matches has increased substantially from 125 to 189 and also stretched the span of the tournament. Now, it has been started alongside other domestic leagues with clubs to play more games in the Initial phase from six games to eight under the new guidelines.

Alongside, the Champions League this newly introduced structure will also be implemented in the UEFA Europa and Conference League. However, the format change hasn’t been received well from the fans and football fraternity who have unwelcomed this introduced change which will force the clubs to play more matches in between the season in midweek and has gained serious criticism.

This change comes after the organisers scrapped the away goal rule from the knockout stages in 2021. The away goal advantage was decisive in deciding the outcome of the match, any team that scored the away goal were had an advantage in aggregate scoreline in both legs helped to determine the winner. It was another one of those changes that made fans unhappy.
