His opportunity in the Primeira Liga came on March 5, 2016, in a match against Sporting CP, where he replaced the injured Júlio César, contributing to Benfica’s 0–1 victory in the Lisbon derby and securing the top spot in the league. Ederson played a pivotal role in eleven subsequent wins, ultimately clinching Benfica’s 35th league title and their third consecutive one.

Five days later, he participated in the Taça da Liga final against Marítimo, helping Benfica secure a 6–2 victory. Additionally, Ederson played three matches in the Champions League campaign, contributing to Benfica’s journey to the quarter-finals. In the following season, he and Benfica achieved a remarkable treble by winning the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

Manchester City

Benfica officially announced on June 1, 2017, that Ederson had completed a transfer to the Premier League club Manchester City for a fee of £35 million. At that time, this made him the second most expensive goalkeeper in history, though he currently holds the fifth position in that ranking. This move equaled Axel Witsel’s transfer fee as the highest amount ever paid for a Benfica player.

Upon joining Manchester City, Ederson swiftly became the preferred goalkeeper under Pep Guardiola, displacing Claudio Bravo. He made his competitive debut on August 12, 2017, securing a clean sheet in a 0–2 away victory against Brighton & Hove Albion. However, in a match against Liverpool on September 9, he endured a kick to the face by Sadio Mané, necessitating his exit from the game after eight minutes of treatment.

Despite receiving eight stitches, Ederson returned with protective headgear in the next Champions League match against Feyenoord. Ederson, showing sportsmanship, believed Mané’s collision was unintentional and accepted the Liverpool player’s apology.

A notable moment came on August 19, 2018, when Ederson made history as the first Manchester City goalkeeper to provide an assist in the Premier League. His goal-kick was converted by Sergio Agüero for the opening goal in a 6–1 victory over Huddersfield Town.

Ederson’s outstanding performance in the 2019–20 Premier League season earned him the Golden Glove, awarded for keeping the most clean sheets (16). This achievement was sealed after a 5–0 home win against Norwich City on July 26, 2020.

During 2021, Ederson committed to a contract extension with Manchester City, ensuring his presence at the club until 2025. As a crucial member of the team, he has become an indispensable asset for Manchester City, signalling a strong likelihood of his continued association with the club for the foreseeable future and Ederson’s jersey number is 31.
