It was a cold end to the Premier League season for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as he looks to put the disappointment of the 2023-24 campaign with the national side. Salah, who got injured during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in February in Ivory Coast, has been named to the Egypt squad on Monday (May 27). The former Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool will now have an opportunity to make amends during the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers with Egypt.
Salah returns to Egypt squad
After missing both the AFCON and the March international break due to injury, the forward made himself available for selection for the first time under new boss Hossam Hassan. The pair has been in the news for their frictional relationship in the past but will put their differences aside as Egypt tries to move on from the disappointment of missing out on FIFA 2022 World Cup qualification. Salah in particular will have a point to prove as he enters the decisive phase of his Liverpool career.
The forward had a spat with then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in the last phase of the Premier League season. Salah was seen furious with Klopp on the touchline during the away match at West Ham which ended in a draw.
On the flip side, Salah has been linked with a move away from club with him now in the twilight of his career. The Reds are expected to cash in forward, who turns 32 next month. If this is the case, the former Chelsea man will look to prove a point to the potential suitors on why he is still one of the best players in the world.
Reports have seen him linked with a move away from Europe, linking him with a move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL). Again if this is the case, Salah might have already played his last club match on European soil.
Egypt are currently top of FIFA World Cup qualifying group A with two wins in two matches while scoring eight goals without any response. Egypt will face Burkina Faso on June 6 and Guinea-Bissau on June 10. Here is the list of players who got selected for Egypt FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifier Squad:
