FC Barcelona suffers fresh blow as Dani Olmo injures his hamstring

Dani Olmo’s fairytale start to life at FC Barcelona has encountered a major obstacle. The Blaugranas travelled to Estadio Montilivi on Sunday to take on Girona. Olmo got himself on the scoresheet but had to be taken off by Hansi Flick after the midfielder complained of troubles in his right hamstring. The midfielder picked up a knock during the recent international break, which worsened against Girona leaving fans dejected.

Barcelona published Dani Olmo’s medical report this morning which highlighted an injury to the femoral biceps of his right thigh. The former Leipzig man has been an unfortunate sufferer of constant fitness woes. His unavailability adds him to a long list of absentees at Barcelona which includes the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Gavi, and more. The news comes at a terrible time for Hansi Flick who is preparing his squad for a hectic calendar.

The 26-year-old was the big-name signing in the summer for Barcelona. There were several debates surrounding his signing but Olmo has managed to shut the critics down during the early weeks. He has scored a goal in all three of his La Liga appearances so far. Hansi Flick has managed to find an ideal role for him as a number ten behind Robert Lewandowski. The Catalans will hope that his injury will not disrupt his rhythm and sharpness.

When is Dani Olmo expected to return?

The initial sensations around Dani Olmo injury were positive ones. Those around the club expected it to be only an overload with a quick return. Nonetheless, Barcelona supporters were left in despair today as detailed medical tests predicted Olmo to be out for at least four to five weeks. Barcelona’s coaching staff will have a challenging task on their hands to devise a plan in the absence of Dani Olmo.

The Spaniard will be out for this week’s opening Champions League game against Monaco. He is not expected to be back until mid-October. This puts his availability for the crucial matches against Bayern Munich and Sevilla in jeopardy. The five-time European champions will hope that Olmo can feature in the first Clasico of the season at the end of October. He will now undergo a rigorous recovery process to build his fitness for the rest of the campaign.
