Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run continues

Florian Wirtz (28′) and Robert Andrich (73′) were on the scoresheet as Bayer Leverkusen managed a 2-0 win over AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg. The 2023-24 Bundesliga champions continue their astonishing unbeaten run this season. After winning the German league, Xabi Alonso and co. have now taken a step closer to the Europa League finals.

Leverkusen capitalized on a defensive error for the opening goal, which Wirtz converted from close range. He has now scored 18 goals and has provided 19 assists in 45 appearances across competitions this season, taking his goals contribution tally for the season to 37.

Andrich then scored an absolute belter for Leverkusen’s second, firing an unstoppable rocket from outside the Roma penalty area. Mile Svilar was left rooted to his spot as the Roma goalkeeper could do nothing but watch the ball bulge the back of his net.

Leverkusen are now favorites to progress to the final, courtesy of their big first-leg win in Italy. The second leg at the BayArena will take place on May 9.

Xabi Alonso looking to lead Bayer Leverkusen to the treble

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are now unbeaten in their 47 matches this season. They have been simply magnificent. Apart from winning the Bundesliga, Leverkusen are also in the DFB Pokal final, where they’ll play FC Kaiserslautern. Meanwhile, Leverkusen are also on the verge of reaching the UEFA Europa League final.

This is only Alonso’s second season in Bundesliga and in first-team coaching at the top level. The 2010 World Cup winner is already doing wonders. To make matters better for Leverkusen fans, Alonso is set to stay put at the club at least for the next season. His evolution as a manager has fans intrigued.
