Frenkie de Jong Injury Update: When will the Dutchman return?

Frenkie de Jong Injury: Midfielder picked an injury during the recent El Clasico

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong sustained a right ankle sprain during their El Clasico encounter with Real Madrid on 22 April. The Dutchman was involved in a collision with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde and was subsequently forced off.

The Blaugrana soon put out a statement on their official website, saying that his exact date of return is unknown, and his recovery will determine his availability. A fortnight later, his condition remains subject to speculation.

Frenkie de Jong injury could lead him to miss the remainder of the season. On the popular football website, Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old is indicated to miss the remainder of the campaign for Barcelona, as he’s set to remain sidelined until 30 May, when the season would be already over.

The Catalans play their final La Liga match of the season on 26 May, away to Sevilla, whereas their Champions League campaign is long over after being knocked out by PSG in the quarter-finals last month. They lost out at the same stage in the Copa del Rey too, when Athletic Bilbao dealt them a 4-2 thumping loss in January.

Barcelona to end season without a title

After Real Madrid were confirmed La Liga winners last weekend, FC Barcelona are now set to finish their campaign without a single trophy. The Catalans have been poor in recent months, having otherwise started their season strongly. It all started to unravel with the crushing 4-1 loss to arch-rivals Real Madrid in the finals of the Spanish Supercup.

Less than two weeks later, Athletic Bilbao ended their Copa del Rey hopes with a 4-2 victory. Last month, PSG fought back from a deficit to beat them 4-1 in their own backyard and knock them out of the Champions League too. In the meantime, their results in La Liga were also erratic, all of which came to a head last weekend, when Girona beat them 4-2 again, rendering Real Madrid unassailable.

Xavi, who reversed his original decision to leave, will have another rebuilding task on his hands next season.
