Leon Goretzka

Leon Goretzka’s situation at Bayern Munich alerts Premier League clubs for a move next summer

Manchester United and West Ham United might start preparing themselves to enter into a bidding war for Leon Goretzka’s signature. The German midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at Bayern Munich and was put on the transfer list in the summer. Unfortunately, Goretzka was not able to find a way out of the Allianz Arena and is reportedly already frustrated with his role at Bayern this season.

Premier League giants, Manchester United have been interested in the 29-year-old for several years now. The club will now face competition from West Ham, who can offer Goretzka a guaranteed starting role. United already has a plethora of midfielders in its ranks which might persuade the former Schalke man to look beyond the Red Devils. His staggering annual salary of €17 million at Bayern also reduces his potential suitors considerably.

Leon Goretzka burst onto the scene as a senior professional footballer with the Bundesliga side, Schalke. His versatility, energy, stamina, physicality, and defensive prowess made him one of the most attractive profiles in German football. Goretzka added another dimension to his game, which was his ability to score regular goals from midfield. The accomplished move to Bayern Munich came next in 2018, where the German has lifted every trophy available.

Leon Goretzka deemed surplus to Vincent Kompany’s squad plan

Vincent Kompany took over the managerial duties at Bayern Munich this summer. He was provided with the signing of Joao Palhinha as the holding midfielder. In recent seasons, Leon Goretzka was paired with Joshua Kimmich as the double pivot which led to Bayern losing the midfield battle more often than not. Fans grew frustrated with Goretzka due to his lack of suitability in the role, a feeling which was also shared by the new coach, Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian coach has named Joao Palhinha, Joshua Kimmich, and even Raphael Guerreiro in his midfield so far this campaign. Leon Goretzka has played only 10 minutes this season, all from the bench. He got his first goal of the season in the first Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder will enter the final year of his contract in 2025 and that will inevitably attract serious interest from clubs all over Europe to sign him on reasonable financial terms.
