Manchester United could beat Arsenal to the signature of top Belgian wonderkid

Manchester United have reportedly stolen a march on Premier League rivals Arsenal in their pursuit of Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren.

As per reports by Mail Sport, the Red Devils are putting together plans to bring the 18-year-old wonderkid to Old Trafford as they look to rebuild their midfield.

It was earlier reported by Football Insider that Antwerp would hold out for a fee in excess of £25 million, which could even rise up to £50 million should performance-based bonuses be included in a potential contract.

Vermeeren came through Royal Antwerp’s youth setup before breaking into the first team in 2022. Since then, he has made 65 appearances for the club across competitions, scoring thrice and providing eight assists. This season, he has played in every game, making 31 appearances and providing eight goal contributions.

The youngster also played a key role in Antwerp’s march to their first title in over 60 years when they won the Belgian Pro League last season.

Seeing his ability to play at a high-level despite being only 18, it is no surprise that clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United, that are renowned for building young players, have shown interest in his services.

The Gunners signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea in a blockbuster deal in worth £65 million in 2023 but their midfield still looks incomplete, with space for a ball-carrying player still apparent in the XI. United, on the other hand, could do with some fresh legs and a young mind to kickstart their rebuild.

While the £50 million fee being quoted seems too high for a youngster, both Arsenal and Manchester United seem determined to battle it out to try and beat one another to sign the Belgian wonderkid from Antwerp.
