Mexico vs Jamaica: Preview, Prediction, Lineups and Team News | Copa America 2024

Preview

Mexico vs Jamaica will be the first Group B game at the Copa America that will take place at the NRG Stadium in Texas.

El Tri will enter this contest on the back of a wobbly run of form as they have secured just two wins in their last five games, losing the other three. It is interesting to note that they kept clean sheets in both wins and failed to score in two of the three defeats. They scored six goals but let in a worrying nine as they enter this year’s Copa America.

Jamaica, on the other hand, will enter this competition on the back of an encouraging run of form. They have lost just once in their last five games, securing three wins and one draw in the process. The positive is that the three wins have come in their last three outings, with the Jamaicans scoring five goals and conceding two, keeping two clean sheets along the way. They will look to make a statement with a strong performance against Mexico.

That said, let’s take a look at the team news from both camps.

Manager Jaime Lozano played mostly a second-string side in their 4-0 defeat against Uruguay, but reverted back to a much stronger lineup in the 3-2 defeat against Brazil, which seems to be their main team.

Julio Gonzalez will be the starting goalkeeper, with skipper Edson Alvarez, Johan Vasquez and Israel Reyes manning the defence in front of him. Luis Chavez and Carlos Rodriguez will anchor the midfield, while Uriel Antuna and Julian Quinones will play out wide. Santiago Gimenez will lead the line for Mexico.

Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson experimented with his lineups in Jamaica’s last two games – A 1-0 win against the Dominican Republic, followed by a 3-2 win against Dominica. However, he will stick with the lineup from the second game.

Jahmali White will take his place between the sticks. Richard King and Di’Shon Bernard will play in central defence, while Karoy Anderson will play as the lone defensive midfielder. Skipper Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Kaheim Dixon will take up the wide attacking roles, while Shamar Nicholson and Michail Antonio will lead the line.

  • Edson Alvarez (Mexico) – The Mexican skipper is coming off a decent season with his new club West Ham United, having joined from Ajax just last summer. A tall and commanding presence in defence, his team will rely on his leadership and organisational skills as Mexico look to go deep into the tournament.
  • Shamar Nicholson (Jamaica) – The Jamaican marksman is in good form of late, having netted in Jamaica’s last two games. He scored the only goal in the win against the Dominican Republic and topped that with a clinical brace against Dominica as Jamaica won 3-2. His combination play with teammates will be crucial as he will be the target-man.

Head-to-Head Record

Being in the same confederation, these two sides have come across each other fairly often in the last few years. However, Mexico have been dominant in their recent meetings, winning three of the last five. The other two games have ended as draws.

Last 5 Games

  • Jamaica 0-3 Mexico [07/23]
  • Mexico 2-2 Jamaica [03/23]
  • Jamaica 1-1 Mexico [06/22]
  • Jamaica 1-2 Mexico [01/22]
  • Mexico 2-1 Jamaica [09/21]

Mexico vs Jamaica Prediction

Recent history suggests Mexico are the favourites heading into this contest. However, Jamaica have played some good football in recent times and will enter this contest on the back of a better run of form than El Tri.

This could be a close game with both teams looking to go all-out at securing a victory to make a good start to Copa America 2024. However, this could result in a score draw.

Prediction: Mexico 2-2 Jamaica.
