Nottingham Forest statement stated that VAR is a ‘Luton fan’

Nottingham Forest’s official X account has posted a scathing tweet aimed at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), accusing them of being a fan of Luton Town, while also slamming erroneous refereeing decisions in their 2-0 defeat to Everton today.

The Tricky Trees sit just a point above 18th-placed Luton after today’s loss with only four games remaining as their battle for survival just intensified. Idrissa Gueye put the Toffees in front after 29 minutes into the kick-off, before Dwight McNeil added a second midway through the second half.

Hovering just one point above the relegation zone, Nottingham slammed the referee for his decisions, including one to not award them a penalty for Ashley Young’s handball inside the area. However, what truly is garnering eyeballs about their tweet is the massive accusation the club made that VAR is a ‘Luton fan’.

On X, formerly Twitter, Nottingham wrote:

“Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept.

We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times.

NFFC will now consider its options.”

It’s rare for clubs to openly accuse the referees of being biased towards a particular club, and Nottingham’s post has drawn criticism as well as support from fans in the comments. However, it may not go down well with the FA, as allegations of bias without concrete evidence could be met with sanctions.

Nottingham Forest have an interesting last few games

Nottingham Forest have only four games left to ensure survival, and it’s an interesting fixture list. Two of those games are against Premier League’s traditional giants, Manchester City and Chelsea, while the other two are against the bottom two – Burnley and Sheffield United. The Tricky Trees are unlikely to take points off the first two, while against fellow relegation battlers Burnley, they could face a tough fight. Sheffield, rock-bottom with only 16 points, face them on the last day, and may have already been relegated by then.
