Poland national football team will take on the Netherlands national football team in their first Group D game at the Volksparkstadion. Poland’s Euro 2020 opener is expected to be a closer contest.
Poland national football team will struggle on Sunday against a side that has performed brilliantly in the European Championships qualification. The Eagles have secured a 3-1 and 2-1 victory at home against Ukraine and Turkey respectively during their pre-tournament preparations. They have been drawn alongside Netherlands, France, and Austria. Despite a disastrous performance in the European qualification, their form in the Nations League earned them a spot in the Euro play-offs.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands national football team has dealt with some key injuries in the build-up to the tournament. The Orange registered back-to-back 4-0 wins against Canada and Iceland in their pre-tournament warm-up ties and have a better record between both sides, winning nine of their 19 meetings between both sides. In 2016, Netherlands failed to qualify for the competition whereas they only made it to the round of 16 back in 2021. They have one of the standout squads in the competition but are without their two main central midfielders, Frenkie De Jong and Teun Koopmeiners.

Poland national football team news
Manager Michal Probierz will be without their talismanic forward Robert Lewandowski in their opening game against the Netherlands. He suffered a thigh injury in Poland’s warm-up friendly against Turkey. The Barcelona striker is expected to be fit to face Austria in the second game of the competition. Paweł Dawidowicz and Karol Świderski also picked up a knock but the duo is expected to return to training in a few days. Arkadiusz Milik was also ruled out of the squad after he sustained a knee injury in the warmup game against Ukraine.

Netherlands, on the other hand, is presently led by Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong will miss the Euros due to an ankle injury and was replaced by Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen. Apart from De Jong, Atlanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners was also ruled out of the tournament due to a groin injury.

Key Players to Watch out for
Jakub Kiwior
The Arsenal defender is one of the first names on Poland’s teamsheet. He has served as a backup player at the Emirates since his arrival from Spezia in January 2023. Kiwior played a new role as a left-back for Arsenal last season. Having turned 24 this year, Kiwior has made definitive improvements to his ability last season. He’s a defender who’s very good in possession and can also deploy as a midfielder which would be a key attribute for Poland in the Euros this summer.
Virgil van Dijk
The Liverpool defender and national team captain has cemented his place in the world’s most coveted defender’s list. Van Dijk enters the Euros after a strong season with Liverpool after winning the Carabao Cup earlier this year. He has been the cornerstone in Liverpool’s defence over the last few years despite him experiencing a slight dip in form after his long-term knee injury.
Poland vs Netherlands Prediction
Poland national football team have always struggled in the European championships, competing in only four tournaments so far. They secured their place in Euros 2024 after overcoming Wales in the play-off finals back in March. Poland isn’t a weaker side by any means, but the lack of forwards like Robert Lewandowski and Arkadiusz Milik could prove to be costly for Michal Probierz’s side.
Netherlands national football team, meanwhile, looks like a stronger side on paper in this Euros. The Oranges are considered as a potential dark horse leading into this tournament. They have competed in the Euros on ten separate occasions and lifted the trophy back in 1988. They finished second in their qualifying group, just four points behind World Champions France.
Predicted Score: Poland 0-2 Netherlands
