Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez is currently in hot water after a video of him and other members of the squad singing a song with racially motivated lyrics emerged online.
The incident occurred in the aftermath of Argentina’s 1-0 win over Columbia in the Copa America 2024 final to lift their second-consecutive title.
Enzo Fernandez could be banned for racist song
In a shocking revelation from his own Instagram Live, Enzo Fernandez shared a clip of himself and a group of his teammates singing a song about the French national team. Apart from the irrelevance of bringing the French into this, the lyrics of the song aim a dig at the diverse set of players the French team has. You can watch the video below:
The lyrics of the song go like,
“They play for France but they are from Angola, his mother is Nigerian, his father is Cameroonian, but on the passport: French.”
Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana was the first to react to this development and shared a post with a caption that read, ‘Football in 2024: uninhibited racism’. His reaction was followed by many more Blues’ players reacting and also unfollowing Fernandez on social media.
As a result, reports from multiple outlets suggest that Chelsea will launch an investigation into the matter and that the Argentine could be banned from all football for up to 12 matches. Apart from that, Fernandez has surely caused a rift in the dressing room at Stamford Bridge and it could have pushed him into a point of no return.
Chelsea midfielder releases statement of apology
Enzo Fernandez’s live video received a lot of instant backlash and Chelsea players showed their disapproval by unfollowing him on social media. Most of the players who did so are the Argentine’s Black teammates, who were bound to be hurt and offended seeing their teammate behave this way.
As a result, the player was compelled to apologize publicly and did so via a post on Instagram with his statement. You can see his post below:
In addition to the backlash, the French Football Association led by president Philippe Diallo, also released a statement condemning the Argentine players and vowed to take legal action against them soon.
