Scotland vs Hungary: Preview, Prediction, Lineups and Team News | Euro 2024

Preview

Scotland vs Hungary will be Group B’s third round of games in Euro 2024 and will take place at the MHP Arena as both teams will look to bounce back from disappointing results.

The Scots will enter this game on the back of a woeful outing against Germany in the opening game as they were smashed 5-1. They trailed 3-0 at the interval and even the goal they scored was an own goal by Antonio Rudiger. In the game against Switzerland after that, Scott McTominay gave them an early lead but they failed to hold on as Xherdan Shaqiri’s wonder-goal secured a points for the Swiss.

Hungary, on the other hand, have suffered two consecutive defeats prior to their next game. They were brushed aside 3-1 by Switzerland in the opening fixture as they conceded a late goal to make things worse. Hosts Germany then made light work of Hungary and won 2-0, although the scoreline could have been much worse. They will look to end their campaign on a high with hopes of qualification to the knockouts looking bleak.

Having said that, let’s take a look at the team news coming out of both teams.

Manager Steve Clarke has used the same lineup in both of Scotland’s last games and will likely keep the same combination for the next one. However, Kieran Tierney was stretchered off in the last match and will miss out.

Angus Gunn will retain his number one spot, while Scott McKenna will come in for the injured Tierney in defence. Skipper Andrew Robertson and Anthony Ralston will play as the wing-backs, with Callum Mcgregor partnering Billy Gilmour in midfield. Scott McTominay will play as the attacking midfieler, with Che Adams and John McGinn leading the line.

Key Players to Watch

Szoboszlai will look to end the tournament on a high. (Getty Images)
  • Scott McTominay (Scotland) – McTominay looked sharp in the draw against Switzerland and even scored an early goal to put his team ahead. He had an eventful game overall and was in the thick of things for his team. He passed the ball with 70% accuracy, including two key passes and three crosses. He also won three duels and made three clearances, and will look to put in another good showing against Hungary.
  • Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary) – The Hungarian captain will look to make an impact on a game as he has been unable to do so in two matches at Euro 2024. Even at club level, he suffered a hamstring injury at the start of the year and has done really well to regain fitness and form. Now, he will look to end their Euro campaign on a good note.

Scotland vs Hungary Head-to-Head Record

These two sides have met just once before in an International Friendly back in 2018. Scotland secured a 1-0 win in that game thanks to Ollie McBurnie’s second-half strike.

Last Result

  • Hungary 0-1 Scotland [03/18]

Prediction

Seeing that both teams already have one foot out of the competition, this game will merely be a consolation match for both teams to have a proper go. Pound for pound, Scotland seem the more balanced and complete team and also have the better individuals. However, Hungary can be troublesome on their day and will fight until the end, meaning this game could be a score draw.

Prediction: Scotland 2-2 Hungary.
