Sergio Reguilon’s Loan Spell Cut Short as Manchester United Triggers Break Clause

Manchester United have decided to terminate the loan move of Sergio Reguilon, triggering a break clause to send the Spanish left-back back to Tottenham Hotspur. The 27-year-old joined United in September to address the team’s left-back concerns due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Reguilon made 12 appearances across various competitions during his loan stint at United. However, with Shaw now back to full fitness and Malacia nearing a return, coupled with the reduced fixture load following United’s exits from the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the decision was made to cut short Reguilon’s loan spell.

Man United to look at other options as Tottenham Hotspur welcomes back Sergio Reguilon in this Winter window

United initially prioritized Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella but turned to Reguilon after complications arose with Cucurella’s appearance for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup before the summer window closed. Reguilon’s return to Tottenham comes at a time when United have multiple options available, making the Spaniard’s playing timeless certain.

Shaw, who faced early-season injuries, recently made a return but missed the last two games due to a minor issue. The unexpected absence of Shaw and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who has also featured at left-back for United this season, raised questions during the 3-2 win over Aston Villa on December 26. Manager Erik ten Hag later stated that both players had suffered knocks, but the injuries were not deemed serious.

Reguilon, having only featured for United this season, is eligible to play for another club during the ongoing transfer window, according to FIFA rules. The decision to end his loan spell provides Tottenham with a reinforcement option for their squad, while United reassesses their left-back situation for the remainder of the season.
