Sheffield United Transfer News, Analysis and Overview- 2024

Sheffield United Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in English football, currently competing in the Second tier of English football, the EFL Championship. Founded in 1889, the club has been a part of the footballing ecosystem in England across various levels and regional competitions before finding its feet at the top divisions and becoming a mainstay with League title wins across different tiers to its name.

Over the years, Sheffield United established itself as one of the top dogs in the EFL Championship and is one of only five sides to have won all four professional divisions of English football. One of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992-93, the side has a tumultuous time in the top flight, often finding themselves languishing near the bottom before eventually getting relegated. Despite a few strong runs in the top flight, Sheffield United have almost always ended up in the EFL Championship or lower. 

According to sources, Sheffield United is one of the most profitable and sustainable football clubs in the second tier of English football, reporting a record total Income of £62 million ($79 million) in 2022-2023. Interestingly, it is said the club itself has a valuation of €89.10 million, meaning that a lot of its cash flow is attributed to its fans and of course player transfers. As a result, Sheffield United has always managed to keep its head above water and scout top talents from across England and the rest of the world.

Sheffield United Club Performance History

As mentioned previously, Sheffield United was formed in 1889, as an offshoot of Sheffield United Cricket Club. Known as ‘The Blades’ the club had its derby and main rivalry with Sheffield United. Arguably, the club’s best years were between 1895 and 1925 which saw the club crowned as the champions of England in 1897–98 and FA Cup winners in 1899, 1902, 1915, and 1925. That said, things started to go downhill for the club after their last major trophy in 1925. 

Since then the club has faced successive relegations from 1975-76, before finding themselves in the basement of English football, the Fourth Division in 1981, but made their way right back up with successive promotions.  Eventually, the club reached the First Division once again in 1990, after a 14-year exile. Notably, Sheffield United was also one of the founding clubs of the Premier League in 1992, finishing ninth in the inaugural season, which remains a record high for the club. 

In recent years, the club once again made a name for themselves, finishing in ninth during the 2018-19 season. Despite getting relegated in the following season, the club once again made their return to the English top flight in 2023-24. However, a disappointing campaign saw the team win only 3 out of 38 games whilst shipping 104 goals, which set a new record for the most goals conceded in a single Premier League season, breaking Swindon Town’s record of 100 from the 1993–94 season. That said, they have started their 2024-25 year in the Championship quite well and sat atop the table at the time of writing.

Sheffield United Transfer 2024 Challenges & criticisms

All things considered, there was a massive overhaul required at Sheffield United following their relegation from the Premier League. This saw the club needing to raise significant funds, firstly to help them balance their books whilst also allowing them to raise the level of the squad and field players capable of winning their promotion back into the Premier League. 

Naturally, as is the case with any of the relegated sides, there was a massive exodus at Sheffield United following the 2023-24 season, with players being poached by Premier League sides or simply being sold in order to generate funds. As such, 10 new players were brought in to compensate for the 12 outgoings, with a number of youth players being promoted to the first team to make up the numbers. 

Sheffield United Transfer Strategy and Philosophy

For the most part, Sheffield United have always managed to put together a very able squad that has been capable of making their way out of the Championship on occasion. That said, despite finding players that fit into the club’s philosophy and the manager’s style, the club has often struggled in terms of offloading players, often letting their big-money signings leave for much less in following seasons, owing to relegation or other financial constraints. 

That said, the club remains apt at identifying talents from in and around England, occasionally dipping into the foreign market. All in all, the club has seen some very talented names pass through their ranks, which shows that recruitment has never been an issue for the side. However, Sheffield United’s policy of relying on older players is something that has cost them in previous seasons, something that the recruitment has actively looked to change this season. As such, of the 10 new arrivals during the summer, only 3 are above the age of 25. 

Most Expensive Sheffield United Transfers

Before we move on to the summer signings made by Sheffield United, let us first take a look at some of their most expensive signings. Despite not being a club that overly splurges on players, there have been a few significant transfers that stand out above the rest. That said, the top 5 most expensive signings in Sheffield United’s history have been below €26.00 million and all of them have come after the 2019/20 season. 

Coming in at the top spot is Rhian Brewster from Liverpool for €26.00m in 2020-2021. Following that we have Sander Berge from KRC Genk who arrived in 2019-2020 for a fee of €25.00m. Next on the list is former Aston Vila player Cameron Archer who arrived in 2023-2024 for a fee of €21.55m. 

Following these up, we have the likes of Aaron Ramsdale who arrived in the 2020-2021 season for €20.50m from Bournemouth. The next name on the list is Oli McBurnie who arrived from Swansea City in 2019-2020 for a fee of €19.10m.

Sheffield United Transfer New Signings 2024/25

As mentioned previously, the 2024-2025 summer window was a big one for the club and saw the arrival of 10 players, consisting of some known quantities and some up-and-coming talents. During the window, Sheffield United limited their spending to €7.69m on transfers who have made a solid case for themselves this season. That said, there are signs of growing improvement in the squad. 

Up first is the club’s marquee signing this summer, Harrison Burrows, secured from Peterborough for €3.55m. In addition to this, Michael Cooper was brought in by the club, coming in from Plymouth Argyle for €2.35m. Similarly, Kiefer Moore was brought from Bournemouth for €1.79 million.

In addition to this, attacking midfielder Callum O’Hare, Tyrese Campbell, Jamie Shackleton, and Sam McCallum were all brought in on free transfers. At the same time, Harry Souttar, Alfie Gilchrist, and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi were secured on loan deals.  

Sheffield United Transfers All Outgoings 2024/25

Naturally, Sheffield United also had a lot to do in terms of making room for their new signings and making up for departures that had left a gap in the overall quality of the squad. Additionally, there were also players that needed to be moved on.

Firstly, Cameron Archer was sold back to Aston Villa for €16.65 million. Similarly, William Osula was sold to Newcastle for €11.60 million and Auston Trusty departed Celtic FC for €7.10 million whilst Jayden Bogle and Benie Traore were sold for €5.95 million and €4.50 million to Leeds and FC Basel respectively. 

At the same time, longstanding players Oli McBurnie, George Baldock, Max Lowe, Ollie Norwood, Ben Osborn, Daniel Jebbison, and Wes Foderingham all moved on as free transfers. 

Top Signings for Sheffield United in 2024/25

All things considered, there are still a lot of games left to be played with the midpoint of the season rapidly approaching. That said, Sheffield United currently sits in 1st place and has been looking as a favorite to be promoted for the most part. The team has been performing well and has managed 12 wins and 3 losses in the new season so far. 

As of now Michael Cooper, Hary Souttar, and Callum O’Hare have become regular starters in the team and have been playing relatively well for the Sheffield United side.

Worst Signings for Sheffield United in 2024/25

As mentioned previously, there have been numerous departures from the team that have been disposed of or sold for a very nominal fee. As such, it has not yielded them with valuable funds to reinvest into the team either. That said, the players brought in have shown some signs of being better than who they are replacing. 

With a lot of the season still remaining, it will be interesting to see how they can kick on and whether the players are able to justify their position.

Sheffield United Transfer Spend Till Now

All things said, it was a busy summer transfer window for Sheffield United with a number of new signings and departures. By the end of it, the club spent €7.69m whilst raking in €45.80m with their outgoings. Certainly a good bit of business by the club, in terms of offloading players but will now need to reinvest wisely into the squad.

As such, it remains to be seen whether these numbers see any change during the January transfer window with incomings or players being sold or sent out on loan.
