Bayern Munich chief explains why it will be extremely difficult for the club to sign Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso is now the hottest transfer property after what he has done with Bayer Leverkusen this season. Die Werkself are on the verge of winning the Bundesliga, currently leading the table with 10 points gap. 

After the wonderful showing with Leverkusen, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich are chasing their former player Xabi Alonso to return as a tactician. Liverpool and Bayern’s concern is understandable as both club’s will be without a coach at the end of the season.

Liverpool will be without Jurgen Klopp starting from next season after the German gaffer decided to step down as manager at the Anfield-based club. Meanwhile Bayern have announced to go separate ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of this season.

Uli Hoeneß leaves it up to Bayern Munich’s management

Bayern chief Uli Hoeneß has given his opinion about Alonso leaving Leverkusen. As a former key person of one the suitors, he said everything is possible to happen. Due to high demand, it would be a tough job for the management to lure the 2010 World Champion to come to Allianz Arena. 

“If he had had two or three years more success, it would probably be easier to get him out there,” he told  BR24Sport. “We would like to sign him. If that doesn’t work, it will be the task of the sporting management to look for and find alternatives.

“He is now training at a club that is currently in the process of becoming German champions. He has a lot to thank this club for, and so does he.”

Xabi Alonso still has something to prove

Uli Hoeneß also feels that there is a very good chance of Alonso deciding to stay with Bayer Leverkusen. “This will be very difficult, not to say probably impossible. The way I got to know him and appreciate him, he would be more inclined to carry on because he doesn’t want to leave it behind now.”

Despite being favourites to win the Bundesliga and almost ending Bayern’s 12 years of consecutive league-winning seasons, Leverkusen have not won anything yet. Last season, Borussia Dortmund bottled the opportunity in the final week after playing a draw with Mainz. Höneß said this is the moment for Alonso to prove his level.

“He’s [Alonso’s] proven that he can be a coach for the big time,” Höneß told German news outlet Ran Sport on separate occasions. “Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it.”

Apart from the league, Leverkusen is also still in contention of winning both Europa League and DFB Pokal. Florian Wirtz and co reached the Europa League’s quarter final to face West Ham United in a two-legged tie. Meanwhile in the cup tournament, they are 90 minutes away from the final, scheduled to play the semi final against Dusseldorf next week.
