Manchester United had their goal against Crystal Palace after on-field officials called a foul on Dean Henderson. Casemiro’s header looped into the goal in Crystal Palace vs Man United, but VAR confirmed that Rasmus Hojlund barged into the goalkeeper to stop him from getting to the ball and stuck with the on-field decision.
VAR disallowed Man United goal against Crystal Palace
Manchester United was 1-0 down in the first half when Casemiro got the ball into the back of the net in the corner, but Hojlund jumped into Henderson to stop him from collecting the ball, and that saw the Red Devils’ celebration cut short.
Alan Smith was on Sky Sports and backed the decision from the officials and VAR. He said:
“Rasmus Hojlund with the challenge on him. A little shove on him. If that’s two outfield players, I think you get away with that, but as it’s a goalkeeper it is different. I think Henderson gets away with one, he was not strong enough there.”
A similar incident took place during the Arsenal vs Bournemouth game earlier this gameweek. David Raya was jumping to punch the ball when Dominik Solanke barged into him.
However, following that incident, former Premier League referee chief Dermot Gallagher told Sky Sports that the goal should have stood. He said via Daily Mail:
“I expect a goal to be given. Solanke doesn’t look at the ball, he gives him a little nudge but is it enough to knock the goalkeeper off balance like that? The goalkeeper looks as though he goes to get straight up so doesn’t really think he’s been fouled. I thought the easiest decision was to give a goal and it all goes away. The referee ruled there was a foul on the goalkeeper, he judged that was the first thing that happened and relayed that to VAR. VAR looked and confirmed it was a foul to him, but I did expect him to give a goal.”
Manchester United went on to concede three more time in the and lost 4-0 against Crystal Palace. The Red Devils remain 8th in the Premier League table, behind Chelsea on goal difference with three matches remaining this season.
