Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has picked Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo in the GOAT debate. Ronaldo and Rooney were teammates at Manchester United. They formed a deadly duo for several years.
Rooney and Ronaldo, however, haven’t had the best relationship in recent years. Rooney has criticized Ronaldo on occasions and the Portuguese has clapped back. Rooney now picking Messi could further sour the relationship. The former United striker said on a recent episode of The Overlap (via GOAL):
“I think Messi, he’s the best ever. I get a lot of stick for saying Messi where it’s as if, ‘How can you say Messi, it’s Ronaldo.’ I understand that people can say Messi, people can say Ronaldo – they are both incredible, probably the best two players to ever play the game. For me, Messi has just got that little bit more flair, which I like in a player, so that’s the reason.”
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are two of the greatest footballers of the modern era. Fans and fellow professionals are divided in their opinion of who is better. The duo, however, continue producing astonishing numbers on the pitch despite being in their late 30s.
Who is Wayne Rooney’s fantasy teammate? It’s not Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi
Wayne Rooney has played with Cristiano Ronaldo. He has played against Lionel Messi and also Ronaldo. Zinedine Zidane, however, is Rooney’s fantasy teammate. The Manchester United legend said (via GOAL):
“[I wish I played with] Zinedine Zidane, just how good he was. Messi is the best of all time but to play with Zidane [would be amazing]. He’s cool, calm, plays with both feet, goals and assists.”
Zidane is one of the classiest and skillful players of all time. In his heyday, Rooney was also an exceptional player. Hence, fans can only imagine them playing as teammates.
