Serie A champions Napoli keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in January

Defending Serie A champions Napoli are interested in Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to boost their midfield depth.

This is as per reports from The Telegraph, which add that they could move as early as January to acquire one of their priority targets, provided Spurs indicate his availability.

Hojbjerg is reportedly unhappy with a reduced role in Ange Postecoglou’s new-look Tottenham side this season. Despite playing in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United, the Danish international would like to be more involved with the first team.

Known for his high work rate and defensive abilities, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been an important player for Spurs in the past. However, the arrivals of Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur have changed the way the team lines up in midfield.

Hojbjerg was also a summer transfer target for Fulham in 2023. However, they pulled out of the race after Joao Palhinha’s move to Bayern Munich fell through. Ajax, who have now signed Jordan Henderson, were also once in the race for the Dane.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tottenham

Tottenham are currently in a soup with midfielders Sarr and Yves Bissouma away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Due to this shortage, it is unlikely the club will allow Hojbjerg to leave. A decision is likely to be made closer to the February 1 deadline.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg joined Spurs from Southampton in 2020. He has since made 167 appearances for the club across competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 16 assists. This season, however, he has made just 22 appearances for a total of 919 minutes.

Postecoglou’s men are currently fifth in the Premier League table with 40 points from 21 games. They are just five points off the top spot in a tightly-contested table and still have plenty of time to go before the end of the season.
