Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has rather boldly suggested that Chelsea could face a 15-point deduction if £77m PSR loophole is rejected by the Premier League.
Chelsea could face a 15-point deduction:
In a shocking revelation football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, suggested that Chelsea could face a 15-point deduction in the Premier league . Speaking to Sky Sports, Kieran Maguire explained the Chelsea finances in great detail and also spoke about Everton and Nottingham Forest’s anger as the two clubs have seen points deducted for similar offenses.
Speaking about Chelsea’s accounts, football finance expert Kieran Maguire said, “The wages were £400M more last season, the 2nd highest in Premier League history.” He also spoke about Chelsea were forced to sell players and even hotels to avoid breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR)
However, it seems that Chelsea could face a 15-point deduction as the hotels sold by Chelsea in the region of £77 m were to a sister company. Had that deal not gone through, Chelsea wouldn’t have been able to avoid breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules making them liable to point deductions.
The loophole exploited by Chelsea seems to have upset Nottingham Forest and Everton who have had points deducted for breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules as the clubs were £34.5million and £16.5 million over the limit respectively in the 2022-23 season. With Chelsea failing to secure European football for this season, Chelsea could face a 15-point deduction if the loophole of selling the hotels to a sister company was rejected by the Premier League.
Chelsea might miss out on European football for a second season in a row:
While Chelsea could face a 15-point deduction, even without the threat of point deduction it seems that Chelsea might miss out on European football for a second season in a row. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently languishing in 9th place with the business end of the season approaching.
Their tally of 47 points would need a drastic addition by winning all their remaining games for the Blues to even dream of featuring in Europe next season. With their exit from the FA Cup semifinal against Man City last week and their unfortunate loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final earlier in this season, the Blues are set to finish the season trophyless. However, they will be looking forward to the London derby against Arsenal this week as a win for the Blues could drastically reduce Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League this season.
