Al-Nassr Prepares for Saudi Super Cup Clash Against Al-Taawoun

Al-Nassr led by superstar Cristiano Ronaldo have requested foreign officials for their upcoming Saudi Super Cup semi-final against Al-Taawoun. The request which is reported by Al Nassr Zone on X (Twitter) comes ahead of the four-team tournament set to begin on August 13.

The Saudi Super Cup features the top teams from the Saudi Pro League and the King’s Cup. Last season Al-Nassr finished as runners-up in both competitions just behind champions Al-Hilal.

The semi-final match between Al-Nassr and Al-Taawoun will take place on August 14 while Al-Hilal faces Al-Ahli in the other semi-final.

Ronaldo’s Red Card Controversy Sparks Request

The decision to ask for foreign referees may be influenced by a controversial incident involving Ronaldo in their previous Saudi Super Cup match. In April 2024 during a semi-final against Al-Hilal Ronaldo received a red card after protesting a disallowed goal and subsequently elbowing an opponent.

The Portuguese star also showed frustration towards the referee which added to the tension. This incident has made Al-Nassr cautious about officiating in high-stakes matches. By requesting foreign referees as they aim to ensure a fair and impartial game.

Al-Nassr’s Pre-Season Struggles

Al-Nassr have faced challenges in their pre-season preparations, particularly without Ronaldo who had been busy with Euro 2024. The team has been on a tour in Portugal playing six friendly matches with mixed results.

They secured only one win against Marítimo while drawing three and losing two including a heavy 4-0 defeat to FC Porto. The Knights of Najd will hope to regain form and have Ronaldo back in action as they prepare for the semi-final. The return of their star player could be crucial as they aim to lift the Saudi Super Cup and start the new season on a positive note.
