William Gallas Praises Arsenal Move for Riccardo Calafiori

Former Arsenal defender William Gallas has backed Mikel Arteta’s decision to bring in Riccardo Calafiori to strengthen the club’s defensive line.

The Italian international capable of playing both centre-half and left-back is expected to complete his move to Arsenal soon with a medical scheduled for Friday before joining the team on their pre-season tour in America.

Calafiori’s arrival could spell uncertainty for current players Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko who may find themselves further down the pecking order.

Kiwior has struggled to secure a spot in Arteta’s plans since his transfer from Spezia while Zinchenko’s form has dipped and injuries have limited his availability.

William Gallas Critical of Zinchenko’s Defensive Skills

Gallas speaking to Gambling Zone expressed doubts about Zinchenko’s future at Arsenal noting that the Ukrainian international’s defensive capabilities are not up to par. Gallas said:

“Zinchenko has made a lot of mistakes at Arsenal. He’s good in possession and on the counter-attack, but when it comes to defending under pressure, he struggles.”

Gallas suggested that Zinchenko’s limitations were evident even during his time at Manchester City where he rarely featured in crucial matches under Pep Guardiola.

He believes that Arsenal’s defensive needs have evolved beyond what Zinchenko offers particularly in a game increasingly focused on strong, solid back fours.

A New Era of Defence for Arsenal

Gallas also praised Calafiori’s potential impact citing insights from a friend familiar with Italian football. Gallas noted:

“Calafiori is young and has good quality. He can play as a centre-back or left-back, making him a valuable addition to Arsenal, who currently lack a solid left-back.”

Arsenal had the best defence in the Premier League last season but Gallas believes Calafiori’s addition will make them even stronger.

He emphasized the importance of having reliable defenders in modern football noting a trend towards more traditional defensive roles focused on strength and limiting opponents’ chances.

As Arsenal look to build on their defensive success the acquisition of Calafiori signals a continued commitment to strengthening their backline.
