Arsenal vs Newcastle Preview

Third-placed Arsenal will host eighth placed Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday, February 24.

The hosts enter this contest on a brilliant run of form, after facing three consecutive defeats in December. They have now won each of their last five Premier League games, scoring a jaw-dropping 21 goals in the process. They have kept an impressive three clean sheets and conceded just two goals in this run, adding +19 to their goal difference as well. They brushed aside Burnley 5-0 at Turf Moor in their last outing and will look to punish an out-of-form Newcastle at home next time.

The visitors, on the other hand, have steadied their ship considerably well after dealing with a rough patch. They are unbeaten in their last five games across competitions, winning three and drawing two of those. They have scored 14 goals in this run but have conceded an alarming nine goals as well. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last four games, which is a worrying sign before facing a side with the Gunners’ potency. The Magpies drew 2-2 against Bournemouth in their last game and were looking to do well in the next one.

That said, let’s take a look at the team news coming out from both camps.

Arsenal vs Newcastle team news: Mikel Arteta will have most of his main squad fit and available for the game against Newcastle. However, there are a couple of players on their way back from injury, and a couple with recurring niggles.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf) and Gabriel Jesus (knee) will face late fitness tests to determine their availability for the game. Meanwhile, Thomas Partey (hamstring) and Fabio Vieira (groin) are close to returning and could be included in the list of substitutes for the game.

Arsenal vs Newcastle team news: Eddie Howe will be without Sandro Tonali long-term following his suspension for gambling. Starting goalkeeper Nick Pope (shoulder) remains sidelined, with Martin Dubravka set to continue in goal.

Newcastle will also be without an out-and-out striker, with Alexander Isak (groin) and Callum Wilson (chest) big doubts for the trip to North London. Midfielders Joelinton (groin) and Joe Willock (achilles) could also miss the game.

Elsewhere, Bruno Guimaraes risks being suspended for two games should he pick up another booking. He has been booked nine times this season and will have to be careful.

Newcastle

Howe is likely to field the same lineup as the last game against Bournemouth.

Head-to-Head & Prediction

Last 5 Games Head-to-Head

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (11/23)
  • Newcastle 0-2 Arsenal (05/23)
  • Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle (01/23)
  • Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal (05/22)
  • Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle (11/21)

Prediction

As you can see, both teams are tied at two wins apiece in the last five meetings, with the teams sharing one draw. Remarkably, both teams have not scored in the last 11 meetings between these clubs across competitions.

Additionally, Newcastle last won at the Emirates Stadium all the way back in 2010 when they snatched a 1-0 win against 10-man Gunners. It could be another tough trip South for them.

This game could go the hosts’ way considering the form they are in in the league currently.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle.
