But Arsenal are confident of securing a move for the 28-year-old midfielder in the coming days.

Arsenal begin talks with Merino

Arsenal have begun talks to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. It is being reported that the Spanish midfielder is open to the move to the Premier League, unlike teammate Martin Zubimendi, who is said to have turned down a move to Liverpool last week.

This won’t be Merino’s first stint in England though, having turned out for Newcastle for one season in 2017/18. The Guuners have made an approach but the deal still has some way to go.

Martin Zubimendi rejects Liverpool, ensuring his commitment to Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad midfielder, Martin Zubimendi has decided to stay at the club and reject a massive offer from Liverpool, who were ready to pay his 60 million Euro release clause.

The European champion’s decision comes as a relief for the Spanish club as replacing him would have been a problem for Immanol Alguacli.

BREAKING: Martin Zubimendi offered new contract by Real Sociedad

Liverpool still in talks with midfielder Martin Zubimendi

The Reds are continuing to work on a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who has a release clause of £51.5m. Liverpool are eager to make the Spaniard their first signing in the Arne Slot era.

Zubimendi has been with Sociedad since 2011 and was also a part of the Spain squad that won the Euro 2024 in Germany this summer. But the hold-up in Liverpool’s pursuit of the 25-year-old is the structure of the deal as the Reds are keen to add players as part of the potential transfer.

Liverpool is expected to make their decision over the weekend as they are running out of time to sign a new No 6 in this transfer window.

Mikel Merino closer than ever to joining Arsenal

The Gunners are hoping to complete the move for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino by this week, despite the decision over a transfer fee for the 28-year-old midfielder not yet fixed. Merino was one of the standout performers in Euro 2024 this summer and his performances has caught the attention of several European clubs.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were interested in signing the Spaniard, but he has prioritised a move to the Emirates Stadium after agreeing on personal terms with the North London giants.

The transfer fee is said to be over €25 million, which is a steal deal for a player who has entered the final year of his contract with Real Sociedad.
