David De Gea in action for Manchester United

Barcelona weighing up potential move for David de Gea: Reports

Despite leaving Manchester United as a free-agent at the end of the 2022/23 season, David de Gea has struggled to find a new club. The Red Devils did have an option to extend the Spaniard’s contract by one year but decided against that and looked to renegotiate a new deal. They managed to reach an agreement with the shot-stopper but reneged on their agreement and offered him another contract instead.

However, that came at a serious pay cut for the 33-year-old and thus as a result the two parties failed to reach an agreement. But while the goalkeeper has had a lot of interest from the Saudi Pro League, he opted to snub the opportunity for a chance to play European football. Yet offers from within Europe have been sparse with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Newcastle United all going in different directions after registering their interest.

But the situation has now changed as Mundo Deportivo have reported that Barcelona are in search of a new goalkeeper and have shortlisted De Gea as their prime option. The Catalan giants have serious financial issues and have been hit with another reduction in their salary cap by the league. Not only that, they spent less than €3.5m in the summer window while their budget for the winter went towards signing Victor Roque for €40m.

Ter Stegen and Inaki Pena to leave Barcelona?

As a result, the La Liga giants are looking for cheaper options and believe De Gea suits their requirements for a back-up goalkeeper. This comes in light of Marc-Andre ter Stegen being linked with a move to Saudi alongside interest in backup Inaki Pena. While the club are open to letting the latter leave, they won’t entertain offers for Ter Stegen.

Mundo Deportivo has further reported that De Gea is more than open to a move as he wants to sign for a La Liga side and has determined that his future lies in Spain. Not only that, the former Red Devil knows he’ll have to prove himself especially since he hasn’t played a professional game since a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup last June.

However, the 33-year-old is more than willing to do that in his bid to usurp Ter Stegen as the number one at the Spotify Camp Nou.
