Liverpool cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Southampton last night, while Man United stumbled across the line with a flimsy 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest to set up the quarter-final tie with Liverpool in the FA Cup!
Man United vs Liverpool: An FA Cup quarter-final with major implications on the league?
The FA cup draw was held soon after the 5th round was completed and it threw up some interesting ties. With Liverpool participating in their knockout tie against Sparta Praha on 14th March in the Europa League, and the Merseyside Derby on the weekend, the FA Cup tie scheduled for 16th March has raised questions. It is likely that the Everton tie will be postponed.. The postponement could help Liverpool ease their schedule as the Reds look to recover from injuries.
Meanwhile Man City’s quarter-final tie against Newcastle could also lead to postponement of their Premier League tie against Brighton. City was set to play Brighton on 17th, but now will play them on a later date. These postponements might help the two clubs in easing their load for March, but could be problematic if they progress in all of the competitions they’re a part of.
The luckiest of all in a sense to be Arsenal. The London club is currently only two points off table toppers Liverpool and have already been knocked out of the FA Cup. However, they were set to face Chelsea on the 17th March weekend. The Blues are still in the race for the FA Cup and have been Leicester in the quarter-finals for the same day. This means that the London derby will be postponed leading to a massive break for Arsenal before they face Man City later in the month. As the business end of the season nears, this break could potentially have a huge implication on the league!
