2015: An 11-year-old Jhon Duran was enjoying football on the streets and was immediately noticed by Envigado’s scouts. The club are yet to win a major trophy but is known for having a world-class youth system and for producing amazing talent every season. Fondly called “Cantera de Heroes”(Quarry of Heroes), the club produced the likes of James Rodriguez, Juan Quintero, and Mateus Uribe. In Jhon Duran, they stuck gold once again.

Duran spent his initial years as a winger. His speed, agility, decision making and ball-striking impressed the youth coach Wilberth Perea Mena. The coach took the call to make Duran a striker instead of a winger. He took a fatherly role at the academy and helped Duran by showing him clips of iconic strikers and helping him realize his potential. Perea also told a young Duran that he would play against the best players in the world at the best stadiums and it did come true.

2019: Coach Perea’s efforts paid off as Jhon Duran broke into the Envigado first team in 2019 as a 15-year-old. On 1st September 2019, Duran scored his first-ever senior goal and became the second-youngest goalscorer in Categoria Primera A. In two years, Duran scored 10 goals for the club in 49 appearances. He was included in The Guardian’s “60 of the best young talents in world football”.

2021: Sebastian Pelzer, Chicago Fire’s technical director was attending Envigado’s game to scout Duran’s teammate Carlos Teran. An ex-Premier League player himself, Pelzer knows what it takes to thrive in English football. He said the wow factor he felt when he saw Duran made him believe he was going to be a star one day. He was impressed by Duran’s speed, dominance in the air and finishing. He decided to make Duran a primary target.

The Guardian’s Next Gen list made an open race for Duran as the world knew about him. Pelzer wanted to sign Duran at any cost and made efforts to contact Duran’s family. During the pandemic, they got the family together and convinced the striker to sign for them.

In January 2021, Jhon Duran became the youngest international signing in MLS history for a fee of £1.8 million. He was only eligible to move to the club once he turned 18 in January 2022.

As a young South American in a huge American city, Duran did take his time to settle at the club. He ended his first campaign with 8 goals and 3 assists in the league. Pelzer said they weren’t naïve to expect him to stay at the club for long and his fears came true when Aston Villa came calling.

2023: Just a year into his stint with Chicago Fire, Astin Villa signed Duran on an ambitious deal. Jhon Duran left the 2023 South American U-20 Championship to fly to England to complete the move. He was announced on 23rd January in a deal worth £14.75 million. Jhon Duran was bedded slowly into the setup by Unai Emery as Ollie Watkins was the starting striker.

He ended his first half-campaign goalless. He hit the ground running in his second season by scoring against Everton off the bench. He was the starter in UEFA Europa Conference League and scored 3 times there.

Duran earned the tag of a super sub as he scored crucial goals for the club. His eye for amazing goals was evident too as his chested half-volley against Crystal Palace won the Goal of the Season at Aston Villa along with bagging the league’s Goal of the Month. His brace against Liverpool in a 3-3 draw off the bench earned great laurels and helped them win a UEFA Champions League berth.

2024: Jhon Duran wanted the starting spot at Aston Villa. Ollie Watkins had the trust of Unai Emery and Duran wanted to try his luck elsewhere. He tried to force a move as he was linked with West Ham United and Chelsea. Duran even made a “Hammer” gesture on the livestream to force a move-out. However, the deal fell through and Duran stayed put at Villa Park.

He scored the winning goal against West Ham in the league as a substitute to pledge his commitment to Aston Villa. His lore as a super sub grew as he scored a host of crucial winners. In the league, he scored consecutive winners against Leicester City and Everton. The goal against Everton was a spectacular long ranger that won the Goal of the Month.

Duran’s Champions League debut couldn’t have gone any better as he scored a memorable lob from a long way out against the legendary Manuel Neuer to hand his side a 1-0 win against Bayern Munich. Aston Villa then announced he signed a new contract with them till 2030 on improved terms.

An injury to Ollie Watkins in late 2024 has seen Duran earn the starting striker spot. But a shock was in the making.

2025: Jhon Duran’s rise was meteoric. From the Colombian League to the MLS to the riches of the Premier League and the Champions League. His career however was yet to be fast-tracked. His attitude became a problem in the dressing room according to a few unnamed sources. Unai Emery who wanted to keep Duran in the summer, granted a move away when Al-Nassr came in with a huge bid.

Aston Villa also had to balance their books and had to sell Jhon Duran when a bid of £64 million was tabled. Duran moved for the third time in three years. He signed a huge contract that could set him up for decades financially. His choice of picking Saudi Arabia was criticized as he left before the crucial knockout stages in the Champions League.

However, Duran wanted to be a part of the Saudi Pro-League revolution. How could anyone turn down a move to play with the potential Greatest of All Time Cristiano Ronaldo? Duran hit the ground running in Riyadh. He is playing alongside Ronaldo in a strike-pair and scored a brace on his league debut. With 4 goals in 3 games, he is looking to learn from Ronaldo and become a world-beater.

He is expected to win them the AFC Champions League and the league title as well. Duran is only 21 and could still make a return to Europe after a couple of successful years in the Middle East.

International Career

Colombia was on the hunt to replace the aging Radamel Falcao. They needed a gunman to lead their forward line alongside superstar Luis Diaz. Duran’s emergence played into their hands. He was a very regular at the youth levels.

Duran represented Colombia at the 2019 South American U-17 Championship. It did take three years for him to get a senior bow. Duran replaced Radamel Falcao himself as a half-time substitute on 24 September 2022.

A full debut followed a few months later in March 2023 against Japan and he scored his first goal for his country then. He added one more goal in the 2026 World Cup qualification against Chile in a 4-0 win. Duran was pretty much an unused substitute for his country during the 2024 Copa America.

Although he has yet to replicate his brilliant club-scoring pace for his country, he is a key figure in attack. Jhon Duran would play a pivotal role in the 2026 Soccer World Cup in the United States of America closer to his home.

Jhon Duran Injury Record

Jhon Duran is relatively injury-free. He only played 6800 minutes of football before his ambitious move to Al-Nassr. Since he wasn’t overworked at youth level, he had ample time to grow and adjust his game.

At Aston Villa where he had his first big breakthrough, he suffered from knocks and hamstring injuries. One such hamstring injury kept him out of action for a month and a half in early 2024. Since he was also a perennial super sub at the club, he was always carefully managed.

At Al-Nassr, he would be a starter every game and the minutes would increase tenfold and he needs to sustain his fitness.
