Considered one of the best strikers of his generation, Ruud Van Nistelrooy had a career spanning nearly two decades, marked by productive spells at PSV, Man Utd and Real Madrid. Nistelrooy kickstarted his professional career in 1993 with Den Bosche, where his exploits earned him a move to a fellow Dutch club Heerenveen in 1997. He played just one season at Heerenveen before getting transferred to PSV for a then-club-record fee.

Shouldering massive expectations, Nistelrooy hit the ground running at PSV, taking his game to the next level with unbelievable scoring numbers. It was at PSV that the Dutchman established himself as one of the most sought-after players in Europe, registering 60 goals in Eredivisie in his first two seasons. It also caught the attention of Manchester United, who won the race for his signature in 2000. However, when Nistelrooy was about to complete a club-record transfer worth £18.5 million to Old Trafford, an unexpected failure in medical tests due to his fitness issues forced the move to fall apart. He soon suffered an ACL injury but joined his long-term suitors Man Utd a year later.

The transfer happened at the behest of the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was impressed with Nistelrooy’s scintillating form at PSV. The Dutch striker also promised that he wouldn’t be bogged down by his hefty price tag. Making his debut in 2001, Nistelrooy wasted no time in adapting to the Premier League, racking up more than 20 goals in his first season. He was particularly a different beast in the UEFA Champions League, a trend that continued in the following seasons as he became a prolific scorer of the competition.

He was the top scorer of UCL for three consecutive seasons, though he failed to win the trophy with the Red Devils. Nevertheless, he fortified his status as one of the lethal strikers in Europe, netting 150 goals and 29 assists in 219 appearances for the Red Devils whilst winning the Premier League in 2002/03 and every other domestic title.

Following his five-year spell at Man Utd, Nistelrooy extended his popularity by signing for Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2006. He made an instant impact by going on to win the Pichichi award – awarded to La Liga’s top scorer – in his debut season with 25 goals, where Madrid were crowned the league champions. He followed it up with 20 goals in his next season. Despite showing impressive scoring consistency, Nistelrooy’s final seasons were marked by a flurry of injuries, hampering his progress.

With two La Liga titles to his name, Nistelrooy’s association with Los Blancos ended in 2009. As he approached his twilight, the Dutchman had spells at Hamburger SV and Malaga before hanging his boots for good.

As far as his playing style goes, Nistelrooy was known for his predatory instincts inside the penalty box. He was a classical poacher who relied on his in-the-box awareness, aerial ability due to his taller stature and well-timed runs behind the defence.

As a prolific and consistent scorer at the club level, Nistelrooy was regular for the Netherlands national team during his prime years but failed to win any silverware. Being part of the 2006 World Cup, 2004 and 2008 Euros, Nistelooy initially announced his retirement in 2008. Although he made himself available later ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where the Dutch side would reach the finals, the former Man Utd striker was snubbed by then-head coach Bert van Marwijk. Nistelrooy made a total of 70 appearances with Orange, scoring 35 goals.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first major role in management came with the Netherlands national team as an assistant to the then-head coach Guus Hiddink at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was appointed the PSV’s U-19 coach in 2018 before taking reigns at the senior team four years later in 2022. In his first-ever season as a senior-team manager, Nistelrooy exceeded expectations by leading PSV to the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield titles. He parted ways with his former club after just one season, citing a lack of support from the club.

In the summer of 2024, Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford as an assistant to head coach Erik ten Hag. However, following the former Ajax gaffer’s dismissal due to poor results, Nistelrooy was promoted as the caretaker manager until Ruben Amorim took charge. During his brief stay, the legendary Dutch striker helped Man Utd get back on the track, winning 3 and drawing 1 in 4 games. The 3-0 win against Leicester City marked his final game as he exited the Red Devils after learning that he had no place in Amorim’s backroom staff.
