Barcelona youngster Pau Cubarsi endured a severe blow to his face during Tuesday’s Champions League win over Crvena Zvezda. The Blaugrana giants secured an emphatic 5-2 win on their road to Serbia but it came at the cost of their defender.
The 17-year-old defender sustained a nasty facial injury when he went for the ball in the second half and ended up taking a boot to his face. Cubarsi stopped in the middle to meet a cross with his head but the studs of opposition defender Uros Spajic were planted into the side of his head.
His teammates quickly realised it was a serious injury and were quick to call the medical staff to attend to the wounded teenager. Cubarsi bled profusely and received treatment from the medics before being substituted in the 67th minute for Sergi Dominguez.
Will Pau Cubarsi stay out for a long time?
The young defender received 10 stitches according to Mundo Deportivo while Barcelona ran out a comfortable 5-2 win over Crvena Zvezda. According to manager Hansi Flick, the defender will be quick to recover.
“Cubarsi is fine, he has a scar,” the German coach said. “He is young and will recover.”
His teammate Gavi offered an update with a post on his Instagram which showed the defender’s patched-up face. On a positive note, the youngster did not require a stretcher but could miss Barcelona’s final game against Real Sociedad before the final international break of 2024.
